A CHARITY supporting people with learning disabilities has been awarded a quality mark.

Millfields-based Havencare is the largest organisation in the South West to have successfully achieved the PQASSO (Practical Quality Assurance System for Small Organisations) Quality Mark at Level 2, endorsed by the Charity Commission.

The quality mark is a nationally recognised award that offers users, as well as commissioners and funders, external verification of the quality and credibility of an organisation.

Founded in 1987 and governed by a board of non-executive trustees, Havencare (Plymouth Ltd) was originally created as a means of enabling people with a learning disability to move from long-stay institutions to a place nearer to their original home.

Janet Pounsberry, Havencare's chief executive, said: "We are always looking for ways to improve the service we offer and PQASSO has enabled us to identify our strengths, while ensuring we have everything in place to continue to be successful."

According to the PQASSO assessor's report, Havencare "demonstrated a commitment to quality and has achieved the PQASSO standards in the areas of planning, leadership and management, user-centred service, learning and development, managing money, working with others, and monitoring and evaluation."

The PQASSO quality standards were developed by the Charities Evaluation Service (CES) specifically to support third-sector organisations by setting out the important elements of an efficient and effective organisation.

By achieving the external recognition, organisations can demonstrate to stakeholders, funders and commissioners that their organisation is legally sound, able to achieve planned outcomes and fit for purpose.

The PQASSO Quality Mark is the only quality mark designed by the third-sector specifically to meet the needs of third-sector organisations.
