13-25 (52-50). Woodland Fort C, with a maximum from Mike Willis, also won 6-3 against Inter City F (+22). All of the Astor F team of Steve Harvey, Nick May and Gerry Elliot won two sets when giving Inter City E eight points and winning 6-3. Martin Fowler was the maximum man for Astor E who had little difficulty in knocking out Crafthole D (+2) 6-2. It was not the best night for Woodland Fort F (+19) at Railway B. Fort trailed 2-1 when both Jim Parkins and Mike Perry retired with Railway winning 6-1. A 16-point start was not enough for Woolwell N at Lee Mill. Lee Mill narrowly won the first two sets when Ann Warren beat Mike Townsend 25-17; 26-17 (51-50) and Richard Smaridge defeated George Tregonning also by 25-17; 26-17 (51-50), but then the Millers pulled away to win 6-1. Against Spar Saltash, Woodland Fort H (+11) won the first set when Keith Phillips overcame James Lock by 16-25; 25-21 (52-46), but Saltash (Steve Marley 3) won the next six sets. Another team to concede 11 points and win 6-1 was Woolwell L over Woolwell R. The difference in standard between divisions one and two was evident when Woolwell A from Division One accounted for Woodland Fort A (+25) 6-1.
Division One Crafthole B ( Liz May 3), with only two players, put up a great fight against Crafthole C (+16) only losing 6-4. Three from Darren Stockton for Inter City D was not enough to prevent Astor G (+ 13) winning 6-4 with Ron Parnell and Dave Harding scraping home in the doubles 20-25; 17-25 on the sudden-death point. Woolwell K (+25) took full advantage of their concession to defeat Railway A 6-3, with maximums from Jack Lambert and Ben Williams. Inter City C received only two points from Astor D but it was enough to win 6-3 thanks to three from Paul Lambert. Division Four leaders Molyneux Associates failed to concede 19 points to Crafthole E (Adam Killeya 3) from Division Five, who won 6-3. With only two players Railway C were already 4-0 down to visitors Woolwell I, who won the first two sets played for an early finish and a 6-0 victory. Woolwell D failed to appear at Woolwell M who were awarded the tie.
The following teams were awarded walkovers: Astor C v Woolwell F; Woolwell R v Astor B; University A v Universtity B; Woodland Fort G v Crafthole A; Siblyback v I City B.
BREWIN DOLPHIN MANNAMEAD WINTER
TENNIS LEAGUE by David Williams
AFTER weeks of heavy rain it was the cold weather producing icy courts that was the latest hazard for players.
In the ladies’ Division A, Luisa Waring and Lyn Helliwell continued their unbeaten run when despite a second set switch off they defeated Esther Pettit and Anna Tickle 6-2; 5-6; 6-0. Also experiencing a second set struggle were Linda Trebilcock and Alison Diver in their 6-3; 6-5; 6-0 win over Pat Hexter and Nikki Aitken. Earlier Hexter and Aitken just edged a long and close match against Viv Sargeant and Nancy O‘Connor 6-5; 6-5; 4-6. With O’Connor injured, Sargeant brought in Tania Belcher as sub and the pair combined well to defeat Janet Butler and Linda Haston 6-3; 6-5; 6-4. With Sue Peers-Jones also on the injured list, Joy Pellow had fellow Plympton club member Lisa Light as a sub, and the pair had a straight sets win over Sargeant and Belcher 6-4; 6-2; 6-3. Butler and Haston secured only their second win by beating Ann Short and sub Fiona Spreadbury 6-4; 6-5; 6-2. In Division B, the time limit brought an end to the match between Jean Humphries and Lynne Macfarlane against Jane Poon and Jane Trahair with the score at 6-3; 5-6; 4-5. Jean Smith and Liz Gill made it five wins out of five by bringing two matches forward, including one from next March 2013, in beating Michele Pooley and Suzudo Reed 6-1; 6-1; 6-2 and Linda Galpin and Libby Allman 6-4; 6-2; 6-4.
In the mixed doubles, Dudley Tolkien and Janet Butler achieved a first success at the fifth attempt, but did it the hard way. They trailed 0-4 in the first set and 2-4 in the second set before winning 6-4; 6-5; 4-6 against Howard and Lyn Helliwell.
Steve Randall and Harry Bird put in their best performance to date, but were narrowly beaten in the men’s doubles Division A, 6-5; 4-6; 6-5 by Ashley Reburn and Sam Arkle. With Phil Ruse unavailable, Luke Wakley came in to partner Phil Harbottle in a 6-4; 6-3; 6-5 victory over Andrew Leigh and Phil Whitby. Perry Bailey and Colin Beresford-Jones were on court for only the second time in Division B and suffered a 6-5; 4-6; 6-3 defeat by Declan O’Connell and Yuen Siu. Patrick Poon and John Jacobs managed a win within the time limit in defeating Chris Shorter and Phil Ticehurst 6-3; 3-6; 6-2. Ron Cole and Rob Thomas may have been rusty after a long playing gap but did enough to just get the better of Jon Shackel and Pete Ireland 6-4; 6-5; 5-6. All the three Division C leading pairs had comfortable wins with each conceding just four games. Peter Bradley and Matt Smith beat Martin Whitmill and Tim Wakeham 6-4 ; 6-0 ; 6-0, Matt Harris and Matt Adams beat Gary Eato and Mike Foote 6-1; 6-3; 6-0 and Mike Madden and Jason Holland defeated Dave Graham and Lester Ellicott 6-0; 6-4; 6-0.
