RACQUETS: Round-up from the courts and tables
PLYMOUTH TROPHYMAN PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE by David Williams
IN THE Division One Cup, the two top teams Woolwell A and Woolwell B were unlucky to have been drawn in the same half of the draw.
The meeting between them produced a match which would have made a worthy final with five of the last six sets going to five games.
Unbeaten in the league, Woolwell A looked set for a surprise exit when the B team (Dominic Sussex 3) led 5-3.

Toby Mattacott reduced the arrears for the A team beating Vicky Smith 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10. The A team levelled at 5-5 when Richard Marshall and Harry Cutler beat Sussex and Rory Harries, from a two game deficit, 7-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-4, 12-10.
Marshall and Mattacott won the tie 6-5 by defeating Sussex and Smith 7-11, 13-1 , 11-3, 9-11, 11-7. Maximums from Lisa Radford and Nat Sheehan ensured Woolwell E overcame Crafthole A 6-3. Woolwell D (Mike Hugh 3) had only two players at Woolwell C and won 4-2 on the table, but as they had to concede four sets, this meant Woolwell C won 6-4.
There was another 11-set match in Division Two when Woodland Fort B came from behind to win 6-5 at Railway B. Despite three from Mark Weymouth for the Fort, Railway B led 5-4 after the singles sets.
Weymouth was without doubt the man of the match as Weymouth and Martin Parnell beat Mike Briggs and John Palmer 12-10, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6 and then Weymouth and Dan Kayes beat Briggs and Richard Burley 14-12, 11-8, 11-7.
Dave Pellow, with three for Inter City B, was unlucky to be on the losing side with City going down 6-4 at Astor C. Hosts Railway lost the first set but then Astor A took over to win 6-1.
A third 11-set match occurred at Astor E in Division Three, with Lee Mill causing a minor surprise in a 6-5 win. The Millers soon led 3-0 and then trailed 4-3 before leading again 5-4. For Astor, Tony Bray and Martin Fowler made the score 5-5 with a 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7 win over Richard Smaridge and Mark Chapman.
Lee Mill clinched the win when Chapman and Ann Warren held on to defeat Fowler and Trevor Mole 11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8. Eric Cheung and Henry Tam won all the sets for Woolwell J in a 6-3 win over Inter City C and although Woolwell J were taken to five games in five of the sets they knocked out Woodland Fort C 6-1.
Molyneux Associates were indebted to John Dodd (3 and the doubles with Mike Gaylard) for a 6-4 Division Four win at Woodland Fort F. Fort G (Paul Davis 3) had better fortune as they won by 6-2 at Fort H. Connor McHale was the mainstay for Crafthole D who triumphed over Woodland Fort E 6-4. McHale not only scored a maximum but won the vital sixth set with Marilyn Collings 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10 against Norman Hall and Mike Wakely.
There were comfortable wins in the Division Five Cup for University B 6-3 against Woolwell Q, for Astor H 6-1 against Inter City F and for Ivybridge 6-2 over Crafthole E.
In the Handicap Cup, although Astor A received only a nine point concession, they were too good for Division Two rivals Railway B 6-1. Woolwell L (+13) had little difficulty in defeating Spar Saltash 6-2 and Crafthole C beat two-player Woolwell Q (+33).
