BEACON ELECTRICAL P&D TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE by David Williams

IN THEIR quest for a league and cup double Woolwell B reached the semi-final of the Division One Cup with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Shoot Out Club.

Also winning 6-0 were Astor Hotel A against Railway Club A.

Three each from Gary Wilson and Kevin Buddell gave Woolwell E a 6-2 win at Railway Club C.

Woolwell D became the third Woolwell to win through after a 6-4 victory at Railway Club B with their points coming from Marketa Myskova (3), Elaine Short (2) and then Myskova and Debbie Whiting beating Gary West and Colin Mitchell 11-2,11-6, 11-5.

Another double-chasing team are Crafthole District A in Division Two, who won 6-0 at Astor D, although two sets did go to five games.

The top Division Two player, Brian Luscombe, won his maximum for Woodland Fort A, but without Colin Poyntz the Fort lost 6-4 to Woolwell F. Tony Freestone (3) was the form player for Railway Club D who won 6-3 at Astor B.

All the other divisional cup matches were on a round robin basis. In Division Three A, Naval Stores A (Tony Powlesland (3) recovered from 3-2 down to defeat Inter City C 7-3. Elburton remained unbeaten by winning 6-4 at Inter City D. Siblyback A kept up their league form in Division Three B when maximums from Miles Noel-Johnson and Jim Hughes ensured an 8-2 win at Woodland Fort C.

By contrast, league leaders Inter City A lost 6-4 to lowly Woolwell H who had previously won once in the league. Ben Stanbury (3) was the best player for Woolwell and scored a vital 11-1, 11-8, 7-11, 8-11, 11-4 win over Adrian Osborne.

Woodland Fort E, with three from Mike Wakley, won 7-3 in Division Four A and then won by the same score against Astor E with Norman Hall being the maximum man.

The match had four five game sets with Wakley losing for the first time ever to John Norsworthy by 11-6, 5-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9.

Lee Mill (Richard Smaridge 3) in Division Four B made it 23 points out of 30 by winning 8-2 against Railway Club E. Saltash got back to form when with Steve Marley (3) and the doubles with James Lock, they beat Molyneux Associates 8-2.

Naval Stores B had two Division Five A wins, defeating Woodland Fort H (7-3) and Woodland Fort G (6-4). Fort H also went down 6-4 at Woolwell K. Inter City G played Woolwell I for cup and league points and won 6-5 in Division 5B . Woodland Fort F still lead after a 7-3 win over Inter City F.

Crafthole District E won 6-4 at Woolwell N in Division Six A. George Tregonning (Woolwell ), despite losing the second game 11-0 recovered to beat Paul Ager 11-6, 0-11, 11-9, 5-11, 12-10.

There was a first maximum for Jewel Vittle (Woolwell M ) in the 10-0 Division 6B win over Woolwell Q, which included a five game success against Alex Pethick by 11-6, 4-11, 16-18, 21-19, 11-8.

There was a remarkable comeback from injury by Dave Brenton (Inter City B), who beat Naval Stores A 6-4 in Division Three. Playing his first match for three months Brenton not only scored a maximum but came from two games and 7-3 down in the third to beat Tony Powlesland 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.

MANNAMEAD WINTER TENNIS LEAGUE by David Williams

IN MEN'S Division B Pat Pearman and Ron Skinner made the ultimate recovery against Jason Vosper and Alex Picot. It looked all over for Pearman and Skinner after they lost the first set 6-0 and were 5-0 down in the second, but they won the next six games without their opponents getting to match point to level.

Their success continued in the final set with Pearman and Skinner winning on their sixth match point for a 0-6, 6-5, 6-3 victory.

Simon Yeo and Ashley Scoble scored two fine wins beating Max Goodison and Bart Dudley 6-1, 6-5, 6-2 and Phil Tucker and John Sevieri 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

Tucker and Sevieri then had their best win of the season by 6-1, 6-5, (7-5), 4-6 against Andrew Leigh and Alex Peers-Jones.

Sub Lee Horton was the man of the match with excellent play from the baseline which helped partner David Pemberton to a first Division C win by 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 over Dudley Tolkien and Ashley Jarwood. Ron Cole and Rob Thomas remain unbeaten, staving off increased resistance from Pete Ireland and John Shackle to win 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

The closest match resulted in Chris Shorter and Bill Pascoe finally overcoming some of their opponents' unorthodox shots to beat Dave Graham and Jake Daykin 6-3, 4-6, 6-5.

The up and down season for Phil Harbottle and Phil Ruse hit a high with a straight sets win over Jeremy Kevern and Matt Redshaw by 6-2, 6-3, 6-5 in Division A. Neil Hunt and Mike Paskins continue to have the edge over Chris Williams and Paul Wardle winning 6-5, 6-2, 2-6.

In the Ladies' Division A, Kate Gibbons and Toni Aitken had a fairly comfortable win over Tania and Chanelle Belcher by 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Alice Anstee and Olga Rogers played their first 2010 match just doing enough to defeat Abi Davis and Sarah Colpus 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

After last week's reverse it was back to winning ways for Michelle Cooke and Liz Morley. However, they needed all their experience to beat Sophie Murphy and Emma Duxbury who by covering every inch of the court made a good partnership, with Cooke and Morley slightly flattered by a 6-1, 6-1, 5-6 win In Division B, Libby Allman and sub Sandra O'Sullivan won more games than Joan McGregor and Helen Foote, but by winning two tie breaks McGregor and Foote came through 6-5, 6-5, 2-6.

Richard Avent and Jenny Snell take over as the mixed doubles leaders with wins over Phil Ticehurst and Carol Carter by 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 and over Mark Eve and Sue Peers-Jones by 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. Kamran Ali and Joan Williams were in trouble at 1-4 in the second set but Dudley Tolkien and Janet Butler failed to take advantage as Ali and Williams won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. In her first season of competitive play Mandy Lee improves with every match but with Neil Hunt had to accept second best to Eve and Peers-Jones by 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and to Patrick and Jane Poon by 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
