LADIES' AVERAGES 2010
IN THE 2010 season of the Plymouth and District Tennis League, 26 ladies made the averages list by winning 70 per cent or more of sets played, and playing at least seven matches for the same team. Two players, Angharad Micklem and Josie Debnam, both from Mannamead A in Division Two, remained unbeaten with Micklem playing nine matches and Debnam eight. Of the 26 players in the averages, only six appeared in every match.
DIVISION ONE
JUNIOR player Mia Loye of Ivybridge A is this season's top player playing in all 10 matches winning 35 sets out of 40 for 87 per cent. Team-mate Julie Elliott came second with 82 per cent from seven matches. Another young player having an excellent season was Sarah Lucas from Tavistock A who, in third place, averaged 81 per cent. St Budeaux A had two players included, with their first pair of Kate Gibbons on 80 per cent and Janet Butler on 77 per cent. A third player also came from Ivybridge A, captain Nell Clotworthy, who won 25 sets in eight matches for 77 per cent.
DIVISION TWO
WITH Angharad Micklem and Josie Debnam on 100 per cent, it was a case of who would take third place. It went to Margaret Hammett of Ivybridge B who played eight matches for 84 per cent with Verity Holdsworth also from Ivybridge B scoring 77 per cent. Heather Dixon was the third player from division winners Mannamead A to make the list, playing all 10 matches for 80 per cent. Yelverton A over many years have relied on Helen Smith and Karen Gasche for most of their points. The pair came good again with both playing nine matches and Smith winning 27 sets and Gasche taking 26.
DIVISION THREE
ALTHOUGH Ivybridge C were the unbeaten 100 per cent leaders of the division, only one player, Jane Rickman, played the minimum seven matches, winning 27 sets (84 per cent). The list was headed by Gillian Thomas from Whiteford Road A with an impressive 30 set wins out of 32 followed by Linda Trebilcock with 34 set wins from all 10 matches. The Mannamead B pair of Emma Duxbury and Sophie Murray made seven appearances together and won 24 sets for 85 per cent.
DIVISION FOUR
ONLY two teams had players in the list with the leading player Roma McMahon having an almost faultless record of 27 wins from 28 sets for 96 per cent. Penny Punch of Ivybridge D came second on 85 per cent with Nicola White third playing seven matches for 78 per cent. The fourth player was Olga Rogers of Tavistock B with 24 wins in eight matches (75 per cent).
DIVISION FIVE
PAULA BALDOCK was playing tennis again for the first time in more than five years and made an immediate impact with Hill Lane B. Baldock did not miss a match and won 37 sets (92 per cent). Chris Bunney of Saltash missed three of the first four matches and then teamed up with Heather Gynn to be the top pair with Bunney averaging 78 per cent from seven matches and ever-present Gynn averaging 70 per cent. Sarah Brett had a very good season for Whiteford Road B on 71 per cent.
