Residents are still against gypsy site
PLANS showing the city council's Gypsy site proposal for Efford Warren have failed to win support from local residents.
Council officers are on hand in Efford Library for the next three weeks to talk people through the displayed plans, answer questions and receive suggestions from those affected.
But local people who've seen the exhibition of 10-13 permanent plots off Military Road say their minds have not been changed.
Kathy Wood, 54, was outside the building with a petition against the site, and had collected 17 signatures in just 10 minutes.
"Seeing the plans has not changed my mind. No-one wants this site here. Some people get complacent and are used to the powers that be walking all over them but sometimes you've got to stand up and be counted for" she said.
The council-owned land at Efford is the first of a number of possible permanent Gypsy and traveller sites across the city which the council is obliged by the Government to provide.
After public consultation last year, the council is now pushing ahead with designs for the camp as part of a bid for Government funding.
Kathy added: "As far as we're concerned we were never properly consulted to begin with. It's just put up and shut up but we won't give up without a fight."
The plans which include photos of a well kept Gypsy site in Bristol used as a case study for Efford, show a large play area.
Annette Martin, 47, who lives in Manifold Gardens, said: "I can see they're putting up a play area. We've been trying for years and years to get something for our children and I've spoken to councillors and been made promises but nothing has ever happened."
New Gypsy and traveller site at Efford Warren.
Councillor Andy Kerswell told The Herald that under government legislation the local authority must provide a play area in new plans for housing sites and that Manifold Gardens was the only part of Efford with no access to an outside play area.
But he added: "We're currently in the process of getting funds together for a play area in Manifold."
Tina Asquith, 40, who lives in Military Road which backs onto the site, voiced concern over her privacy and Cath Holbrook, 56, says the site is unsuitable because Efford people do not want it.
Fred Thorne, chairman of the Horseshoe Residents Association in Efford, said: "I've been looking up information in Plymouth reference library and can see the council permanently closed a Gypsy Traveller site on the same spot in 1978 which is why many people are opposed. In my opinion the site should not be in the centre of Plymouth but on the edge at a site to be developed for housing so that residents moving in will know what to expect.
"I would urge people to come here and see plans for themselves as they need to make up their own minds by getting as much information as possible."
The display will be in the library at various times, Monday to Friday, until April 17.

“pete from plymouth should not be so quick to tar all travellers with the same brush. I have had first hand experience with the travelling community and found everyone to be friendly and pleasant to be around. ther is good and bad in all walks of life. They are all hard working and spotlessly clean. As for the mess that gets left around by some who pull onto private land i think you will find most are Irish. All travellers should be provided with somewhere to live as you are. Many have bought their own land have have been refused permission to live there. What that about then??? Political claptrap. Folk dont like it as they tend to keep themselves to themselves. As for crime going up, well i dont think thats possible in plymouth really. If i was thinking of living on a travellers site i certainly wouldnt want to live in plymouth. It is a dump afterall. GIVE THEM THEIR SITE.......”

“pete was taken to casualty just after 8pm for ranting himself into a brain haemorrhage - only joking.
He uses a lot of keystrokes about his own unsatisfactory experiences, some time in the past, with an unidentified group of travellers and even more on professing his personal hatred for them all based on his unique experiences, but other than that he doesn't seem to make any particular point. It's no more than the usual simplistic vitriol.
Those of us who disagree with him are told we don't know what we're talking about - He actually has the nerve to question our authority to form opinions based on our experiences and knowledge while freely ramming his own down our necks.
He makes himself look very daft indeed.”

“I cover many counties in my work as an engineer,i also know of,and pass regularly, traveller/gypsie camps. And i can confirm that at almost every one that i pass, there is whithin a quater of a mile of the camps piles of s**t and fly tipping that at the end of a workin` day they couldn`t have bothered or pay to have disposed of properly. If not it`s the s*it and nappys the kids have thrown over the perimiters of the fences or walls surrounding them.Mark my words,if these scum are on your door step or within one quater of a mile your lives will be affected, with either noise, traffic, fly tipping, trespassing of kids and adults on your property touting for work! usually "your drive wants relaying, your trees want trimmin` ya garden landscapin`! Don`t fall for cold callin` OR mobile phone no`s only on vans! DO NOT! GIVE THEM WORK! it will be substanderd and if you wish to complain, they will be unobtainable.FACT!”

“Good argument Ted ... how can they argue that ? except they say "they must obey orders from above " .... fight for the democracy and fight for the rights of people who will haveto live beside this kind of rubbish what is being imposed on them ... its absolute disgrace that this kind of thing is being imposed on local villagers - and to try to make them feel guilty in the name of racism is just as bad ... just the same as anyone who has different views is scared of being called a terrorist .... what a country this has become !!!!!!”

“If we still live in a democracy then the people affected by the set up of these camps should be able to have a vote on simply yes or no if they accept a campsite closeby. If the vote is no as I suspect then the council should bow down and report back to the Labour controlled government stating the people have spoken. Ultimately they should listen, after all these people voted them in.”

“For the LAST TIME Herald THEY ARE NOT GYPSIES! They are a bunch of people who allegedly seek an alternative travelling lifestyle but a) Don't want to travel so for some reason require a permanent site? and b) Are not that alternative that they do not want to claim state benefits.
These people are not Romany Gypsies a traditional travelling people from Eastern Europe, they are a bunch of dole scrounging hippy types who are living off the UK tax payer. I'm totally in sympathy with the people of Efford and if they choose to march in protest I will certainly join them.”
