Reel confirms date for Alice in Wonderland special screening
PLYMOUTH'S Reel Cinema has confirmed the date of its special screening of Alice in Wonderland for the city's extras.
This news comes as Britain's main cinema chains are threatening to boycott the film altogether following a dispute with Disney over its appearance on DVD.
Reel has confirmed it will not be part of the boycott and has invited 200 people who played a part in the Disney blockbuster shot at Torpoint's Antony House, to be treated like VIPs on Monday, March 8.
Ashley Willis, of Plymouth's Reel, said: "We hope to make it a special occasion and will be rolling out the red carpet.
He said that guests should expect a bit of glitz and glamour and special touches, ensuring a memorable night.
"We want to be a big part of the fun and have already booked in 100 people who were in the film.
He added: "We are encouraging everyone to dress up in Alice outfits or formal wear and our staff will also be getting involved. We like any excuse to have a bit of fun."
He added that it was a shame they couldn't show it on the same night as the London Royal Premiere, February 25 but said that after seriously considering it, Disney decided against the idea, mainly because the cinema does not have the technology to show it in 3D.
If you would like to get your name down on the list, you can email plymouth@reelcinemas.co.uk or call The Plymouth Reel cinema after 5pm on 01752 225553.
All names will have to match up with those on the cast list provided by Disney.
Meanwhile, according to national reports, Odeon, Vue and Cineworld have said they will refuse to show the film if Disney insists on reducing the interval between cinema and DVD release form the usual 17 weeks to 12.
Distributors want to bring out DVDs of the Tim Burton-directed film more quickly because the home video market has declined.
Vue refused to comment but all promotional Alice material has been stripped from the Plymouth venue.
Thousands of people queued up outside The New Continental Hotel for the chance to be a star in a Tim Burton Disney film. Filmed August 6, 2008.

“I have a huge dome complex in my multiroomed mansion - It has dolby 8.1 speakers which are so loud you need ear defenders. The screen is a 3d dome shaped screen and is approximately 250 inches wide. It is the way forward in dome viewing technology for all your dome needs. DC dome is the king.”

“Well done to Reel for sticking their necks out for us extras!! The big chains will be cutting their noses off to spite their faces because there will be lots of people who will want to see this film. It is a shame they have reacted this way, but I am glad that the Herald and Reel are doing what they can to make it a special night for us...thanks!”

“If the film isn't shown on general release in Plymouth readers can go and watch a council meeting instead.Admittedly it has less believable characters and even those taking part have lost the plot never mind viewers but taxpayers might as well get something for the thousands of pounds they throw at the cast .If Lewis Carroll wrote the book today I'm sure the Mad March Hare couldn't compete with throwing millions of pounds on cobblestones in a city talking about cutbacks.”
