ARGYLE boss Peter Reid is checking out two new trialists — defenders Lee Molyneux and Stephane Zubar.

Molyneux, a 21-year-old left-back, parted company with League One club Southampton by mutual consent last month.

Zubar, 23, has been with SC Vaslui in Romania's Liga 1 for the past two seasons. He can play at right-back or in the centre of defence.

Molyneux was a graduate of Everton's youth academy.

He played for England at under-16, under-17 and under-18 level, and made his debut for Everton's reserves at the age of 16.

However, he missed much of the 2007/08 season because of a back injury and, when he returned to fitness, he was on month-to-month contracts.

Molyneux ended up signing for Southampton in January 2009, on a two-and-a-half year contract.

He made four starts in his first month at St Mary's Stadium, and those proved to be the only appearances he made for Saints.

Molyneux went out on loan to Port Vale in March, but did not play any games for the League Two club.

The left-back is set to play for Argyle in their pre-season friendly against Hereford United at Edgar Street tonight (7.45pm).

Molyneux was born in the same town — Huyton in Lancashire — as Reid.

The Pilgrims' boss said: "He's from the same road, believe it or not. I know his mum and dad, and his grandma, very well.

"It's a big coincidence, so we just see how Lee does."

Zubar, whose older brother Ronald plays for Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, will not feature against Hereford.

Reid said: "(Wolves manager) Mick McCarthy put me on to him and he will have a few days with us."

Zubar started his career with Caen in France, but did not play for their first team.

He had loan spells with Pau, and Belgian club FC Brussels, before signing for Vaslui.

Zubar made a total of 33 appearances for Vaslui last season, after playing 10 times the previous campaign.

“David, I don't care who recommended him, his injury record makes him too big a risk. If he plays well tonight and even trains well for a few days, he's hardly been fit in the last two seasons and there simply has to be more reliable players out there than he is.”

“Surely that's what a trial is all about?

If the article said he had been recommended by some anonymous agent would this be more to your liking?

Due to our dire financial position we're currently shopping at Poundland rather than Harrods.

I'm not saying I approve of the situation but that's the reality.”

“There has to be a huge question mark over signing this lad Molyneux!? He's hardly kicked a ball in two years, since a back injury, and the only reason we seem to be giving him a trial is that Peter Reid knows the family! He might turn out to be a world-beater, but he's too big a risk for a cash-strapped outfit like ours.”
