Resources wearing thin with our increasing demands
KEITH Rossiter's piece, "The Real Cost of Capitalism" (The Herald, October 5) raised some very disturbing points.
The world's population is exploding at an alarming rate, placing ever increasing demands on the world's diminishing resources. I found it both alarming, and encouraging. Quoting from a lecture by Tony Juniper, a leading environmentalist, he states that: "In the next forty years we must reduce our global carbon footprint, not by the 20 to 30 per cent we are struggling to achieve now, but by 99 per cent." And he goes on to say: " The key question in the 21st century, is to figure out what kind of system could sustain flourishing human societies, while keeping it's impacts within what the Earth can sustainably supply".
Oddly enough St Paul wrote in the Book of Hebrews chapter 1 verse 11, "the heavens and the earth shall perish... they shall wax old doth a garment!" A garment that is "waxing old" is wearing out – in short this old world is coming to an end. In St Luke's Gospel chapter 21 and Verse 26, Jesus talks of "Men's hearts failing them for fear, for the things that are coming upon the Earth". Maranatha!
