Reuben Reid returns to Plymouth Argyle

MANAGER John Sheridan believes he can bring the best out of new Plymouth Argyle recruit Reuben Reid.

The 24-year-old striker has started a second spell with the club, after signing on a one-month loan from Yeovil Town.

Sheridan is convinced Reid has the ability to get among the goals for the Pilgrims as they fight to avoid relegation.

Reid is set to be included in the squad for the League Two game against Accrington Stanley at Home Park today (3pm).

He was previously with Argyle from 2006 to 2008, when they were an established side in the Championship, after graduating from their youth ranks.

Reid has played for 12 different clubs, including seven loan spells, during his career and scored 38 league goals in 104 starts and 73 substitute appearances.

He becomes the fifth signing made by Sheridan since he was appointed as Argyle manager on January 6.

Reid has followed Ronan Murray, Guy Branston, Anthony Charles and Gozie Ugwu in making the move to Home Park.

He was a team-mate of Ugwu's earlier this season, when the 19-year-old Reading striker had a loan spell at Yeovil.

Reid's loan spell with Argyle will be up to and including the trip to AFC Wimbledon on February 26, a period covering six games.

Sheridan said: "He has been at the club before, he knows the area and he doesn't live too far away, which is good for us.

"But, first and foremost, he wanted to come as soon as we showed a bit of interest in him.

"I'm very pleased. He's the type of player I wanted. He has got a little bit of experience and has done well at this level and the league above.

"I think he will be a good asset to what we have already got. He has scored goals wherever he has been.

"He has probably had too many clubs for someone his age, but I know what he can do and, if I can get that out of him, I think we will have a very good player.

"That's what I'm looking towards doing. He has got the ability to score goals at this level and I have told him that, if he works hard, he will get his rewards."

Sheridan added: "He's biting at the bit to get a few games and, hopefully, he will get us one or two goals and one or two wins."

Reid made his first team debut for Argyle at the age of 17, under the management of current Stoke City boss Tony Pulis.

He was a substitute in a 2-1 Championship win against Ipswich Town at Home Park in April 2006.

Reid played 12 times for Argyle, including four starts, but did not get any goals.

He had loan spells at five clubs before being released by then Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock in the summer of 2008.

Reid has played for six clubs since then – two of them on loan – with his most successful stint coming at Rotherham United.

He netted 18 times in 41 League Two games for the Millers during the 2008/09 season before signing for West Bromwich Albion.

Reid made seven appearances for West Brom, in addition to having loan spells at Peterborough United and Walsall, before signing for Oldham Athletic in January 2011.

He was released by the Latics last summer and signed a two-year contract with Yeovil.

Reid has played 25 times for the Glovers in all competitions this term, including 11 starts, and scored six goals.

He also completed a hat-trick for Yeovil when they beat Argyle 5-0 in a pre-season friendly at Dorchester Town FC in July.

Reid will wear the squad number 24 for the Pilgrims.

ARGYLE have arranged two much-needed matches for their young professionals and squad players over the next couple of weeks.

An Argyle XI will play Carlsberg South West Peninsula League club Saltash United at Kimberley Stadium on Wednesday, January 30 (7.30pm).

The Pilgrims will also take on Torquay United in a reserves friendly at Home Park on Tuesday, February 5 (2pm). Admission will be free to club members. Otherwise, it will be £2 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Some of Argyle's promising young professionals, such as Jamie Richards, Jared Sims and Matt Lecointe, have been starved of match practice this season.

That has led to fears their development as players could be hindered.
