THE record books could be re-written if a Tiverton fundraiser can visit Cockfosters, Elephant and Castle and the 268 other Tube stations in less than 16 hours and 44 minutes.

Richard Graham, 23, will embark on his journey throughout the entire London Underground network at 5.30am on Friday, February 19, in aid of Tearfund, a Christian charity working to relieve poverty across the world.

The Petroc digital media technician will be joined by Andi James, the three-time Guinness world record holder, who has completed the journey on more than 20 occasions.

Richard has received tips from a number of other "seasoned challengers" ahead of his mission to arrive at or depart by train from all 270 stops on the network in the shortest time possible.

"The challenge has been going on for as long as the Underground has been in existence, but it has become prominent in recent years," said Richard, who lives in North Molton.

"This is the first time I will be doing the full challenge, although I have done smaller ones in the past which have whetted my appetite to do this.

"I have supported others on the challenges which has given me an idea of what it will involve, and have seen that it requires a lot of stamina and it could be considered an endurance test. I will be aiming to beat the current record but, failing that, I will be completing the challenge in its entirety, even if the record time is well out of sight," he added.

Richard hopes to stand by the doors while on board the trains, especially those that align closest with station exits, as well as plotting the quickest route through the winding passageways to his next platform.

So far, he has raised around £130 for Tearfund. But he hopes to raise even more money in his attempt to dethrone Andi, Martin Hazel and Steve Wilson who set the benchmark on December 14, 2009.

Richard added: "People are sponsoring me for a specific station if they have their favourite — more than one person has asked me for Mornington Crescent — or people can sponsor me for the entire challenge"

On August 25, 2005, 67 people embarked on the Tube Challenge as an act of defiance and solidarity after 52 people were killed in the London terror attacks.
