THOUSANDS of bikers and fundraisers have helped raise almost £6,500 for charity at this year's MegaRide – despite delays due to bad weather.

Organisers have tallied up the result for the 2012 event which saw bikers ride along the A38 before meeting up for an event on Plymouth Hoe.

Riders were asked to donate a minimum of £3 for taking part.

The event (pictured) also featured trade stands, catering stands, live music and bouncy castles for the children.

Organiser Rich Bounds said: "Each of the four charities we support will receive around £1,600. The result is lower than last year's but I think that is a sign of where the economy is generally at."

The four charities are MacMillan Cancer Support, Devon Freewheelers, Drakes Sailing Club and Operation Henry Pancreatic Cancer.

They will be handed the money at an event on October 22.

This year was the 18th time the MegaRide has taken place.

Traditionally, the event is held in the middle of the summer, but this year's bad weather meant it was postponed until August.

Organisers are now hoping to make the move a permanent one.

"Postponing cost us £400 in extra advertising alone. But we now want the MegaRide to kick off a week of activities in Plymouth that will include the British Fireworks Championships and the FlavourFest. It might help bring in the tourist to the city with at full week like that," Rich said.

A DVD of the MegaRide with footage taken during the event and interviews with the organisers and charity representatives can be bought through the charity's website.
