THE lack of maintenance or care of the drains in Plymouth over the past few years is coming back to bite with floods on roads appearing all over the city.

The state of these drains can't be missed with rain water flowing over the tops of some of these.

Ringmore Way is one of these areas that always seems to flood when heavy rain falls. A most recent one has been Budshead Road in lower Whitleigh.

I have not seen that drain cleaning vehicle on any road in our area, indeed it seems to be like seeing flying pigs. With winters becoming much wetter it would appear to be in the best interests of Plymouth that this vehicle should be here, there and everywhere, in attempts to clear these regular flooded areas. These are a complete pain to road users, after all is this not part of our council tax?

“I hate this political dodge called two tier government, the big boys at Westminster decide something is to become a local matter or vice versa and hive it off by saying the local councils must manage within their budgets. Political hogwash from politicians with nothing between their ears, flooding has been a problem for years because the problem is never properly addressed. A classic example of gross wasting of taxes, are the vast millions paid to farmers to not till their lands for decades and then a useless enviornment ministry tell us they have not enough cash to avoid so many homes and villages being overwhelmed with floodwater. The drains which must be cleared first are those in the heads of the politicians and so called experts.”

“If it's the street drain that is blocked you contact the council. By street drain I mean the gulley down the side of the road (which also goes under the road when one crosses another). It is often covered with stones. They will be shallow and just carry the rain water.
If it's the sewer that is blocked you contact SWW.”

“"If the council does not sweep the roads, the road gullies get full of muck. If the road gullies are not cleaned out, the drains become blocked. A change in the law 20 years ago took sweeping away from highway authorities and gave it to local authorities whose main concern was litter, so shopping areas get swept frequently. Busy roads, away from commercial districts, hardly ever see a road sweeper and when they do they're driven at "litter sweeping" speeds rather than slower "pick up all the muck" speeds. Have a look at the drainage channels on the A38 to see my point."”

“There are other spots such as Torr Lane junction opposite Sungates by the feeder road off Mannamead Road. Another that was always blocked was the bottom of Fletemoor Road St Budeaux, where I worked but no longer am such a regular visitor. Lets pursue all these problem areas with determination.”

“Have you actually reported the blocked drains, or do you just moan about it?

The drains in my area were cleaned a few months ago and they did a good job.”
