A CYCLIST angry at being confronted by a motorist punched the car's windscreen and shattered it before cycling off, police have said.

Investigators are now keen to trace the cyclist following the road rage incident in St Stephens Road, Saltash, shortly before 5pm on September 19.

Police say the driver approached a cyclist who was reportedly riding in the middle of the road.

When the driver gestured to the cyclist he allegedly responded by hitting the car's windscreen with his fist causing it to shatter.

The cyclist then left the scene. The driver of the car, an orange Ford C-Max, then attempted to follow the cyclist who was last seen in the Burraton Coombe area of Saltash.

Police want to hear from the cyclist or anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the cyclist being followed by an orange car.

“After reading these comments, I find it amazing some of the conclusions some of the readers have made. It is possible to shatter a windscreen with your fist, I saw it happen right in front of me. It is difficult to drive with a shattered windscreen, but possible. The gesture used was an open handed "what are you doing in the middle of the road?" It was the cyclist that got within touching distnce of the car, not the other way around. What the article doesn't say is that there was a 4 year old girl sat in the back seat, who was absolutely terrified and that there was at least a 6 foot wide piece of road that the cyclist could use without risk of being knocked off.”

"Serves the motorist right. Who would want an orange car?"

Sorry to say about 30 years when I worked for the AA I had an Orange card and was a Lada.
Sold it in the end to the local undertaker.”

“Never ever punch glass as you could cut yourslef and bleed to death. I have seen evidence of people punching glass doors when in a bad temper and it has cut their fingers badly and could even decapitate your hand if you hit it hard enough. glass should carry a user warning that if hit it could potentially cause a person to be cut and bleed to death. its very dangerous and can slice down to bone if a person hits a glass door. don't be a fool.”

“"he allegedly responded by hitting the car's windscreen with his fist causing it to shatter"

    - How on earth does someone shatter a car windscreen with their fist whilst riding a bike? Isn't a windscreen a layer of plastic laminated with 2 layers of safety tempered glass either side...

"The driver of the car, an orange Ford C-Max, then attempted to follow the cyclist"

    - How on earth does someone drive with a shattered windscreen?

Seems like some dodgy reporting here to me! Unless it was Chuck Norris on the bike, who shattered Arnies windscreen who then simply kicked out the shattered screen and took pursuit.”

“Cyclist was a **** for riding down the middle of the road (I'm presuming this means 'riding the white line', not taking the lane, which is legal). The driver was a **** for giving him the finger instead of honking the horn and waiting for the cyclist to get out of the way.

Devonrobbie - nice idea, but who's going to pay for it? Every single cycling registration project in the world has been shut down due to lack of funding and no benefits. I also see lots of registered cars doing stupid things, so anyone who thinks that registering bikes would stop offences is deluded.

Also, you don't pay road tax, that was abolished in the 1940s. You pay 'Vehicle Excise Duty'. It goes into the regular tax budget and pays for everything from roads to education to healthcare to duck houses. It's a tax on the pollution cars generate, hence why cars that produce less than 99g of CO2 per KM don't have to pay it. Why should bikes have to pay if these cars don't?”

“Apart from having insurance, paying a level of road tax (& having some kind of MOT.) Shouldn't registration plates for cyclists be compulsory? It would make them accountable,as are other road users, for their misdemeanors & would prevent them from disappearing without trace if they'd been involved in an "incident".”

“Well the motorist is just as much in the wrong by their finger gesture. Hope the cyclist is ok.”
