A STREET robber who threatened to stab his victim in the stomach has been jailed for four years.

Karl Morley, who was high on alcohol and valium, had committed his third robbery at the age of only 22, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

He appeared in custody yesterday, as he is currently serving a jail sentence for spitting in a policewoman's face.

Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor David Gittins said the 20-year-old victim was walking home just after midnight on July 27 last year when he saw a car driving oddly in Warwick Orchard Close, Honicknowle. Morley and another man ran towards him and asked if he had just got out of a car.

Morley then asked: "What have you got on you?" adding to his companion: "I'm taking his stuff anyway."

He then produced a folding knife and said: "Give me your stuff or I'll put the knife in your stomach."

The victim, who had been listening to music on his headphones, handed over his phone and MP3 player, together worth £200.

Morley, of Fore Street, Tamerton Foliot was arrested later but gave police a 'no comment' interview.

Mr Gittins said Morley was convicted at a youth court in January 2005, when he was 15.

In September 2008, he was jailed for 30 months for a robbery in Cornwall, during which he threatened to beat and rape his male victim.

He was released from jail just four months before his latest robbery.

Ali Rafati, for Morley, said his client had taken a "sensible and mature approach" to his offending and accepted full responsibility.

He said that when Morley came out of custody he was fairly low, needed to adjust to life on the outside and fell back on drink and valium.

As he had been unable to moderate his drinking, he had decided to give it up completely.

Judge Judge Neligan said the robbery had been aggravated by being committed at night and with a knife, adding: "Your victim was clearly very frightened."

He gave him credit for his guilty plea, but added: "The fact that you were drunk and on valium is no excuse for this serious offence."

    “"paulmh66"
did you actually read the report before making your post??????
QUOTE" he will probably get a short sentence shortened for one reason or another"

HE GOT 4 YEARS .... it says it quite clearly in the headline.
it beggars belief how people love to comment without even reading the report properly.
now that said this was a di****cable crime that was rightly punished imo with a lengthy sentence and i hope during that time he will come to realise that he still has the chance to change the direction and path his life is taking.
    well i hope so anyway.”

“So it's his third robbery/conviction from the age of 15 until the age of 22.
YEAH RIGHT, the third he got caught for more like.
He'll get a stupidly short sentence (if any) heavily reduced for one reason or other and will be out and at it again.
If I saw him walking anywhere near me or others looking the slightest bit 'dodgey', need I say more.”

“Where do we draw a line where a person is taking a "sensible and mature approach" most TEN year old's even know his/her boundaries, so why is a 22 year old being described as taking a "sensible and mature approach" addressing his actions! unbelievable!!”

“Having known Karl for a fair while, I have seen both sides of his behaviour. I have had mature sensible conversations with him and saw potential and hope for him - even bought him lunch once when he was hungry and sofa hopping. Conversely, on another day, I would see another Karl - snarling, spitting, agressive, angry, bitter and destructive, fuelled by alcohol or more frequently drugs. Karl affiliated himself with the HDR and Danvers and Webbs (frequent Herald news headliners)for a while, and did so to belong and to gain respect amongst his peers - a poor choice but a choice nevertheless to be part of a kindred group. Karl is angry and rebellious and on his worse days is a liability to himself and the public. On these days he has no place in society and society does not need him. Will he change ? Who knows. Maybe the gutter will get him first. What a waste of a young life....”

Yes we can see that. He's now simply threatening to stab people instead of threatening to rape them.

4 years? tough on crime tough on the causes of crime. What a joke.”
