A historic coaching inn in Devon was damaged in a fire early yesterday.

The fire started in the chimney of the Royal Seven Stars in Totnes, parts of which date back to the 17th century, at about 6.30am.

Staff evacuated 16 guests from the hotel after fire alarms sounded. Neighbouring Fore Street had to be closed temporarily while crews tackled the blaze from an aerial ladder platform.

Watch commander Roger Williams, of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The building was evacuated when we got here.

The staff had done a superb job in making sure residents were awoken."

Fore Street was closed temporarily while a structural engineer inspected cracks that had appeared in the chimney.

“" the chimney in the four-storey building was well alight"
"the aerial ladder platform is being got to work."

Bloody hell, who wrote this, the office cat?”
