Girl, 15, dubbed evil and sadistic after torturing teen on The Hoe
A GIRL of 15 dubbed "evil and sadistic" by a judge tortured an older teenager on The Hoe in front of a jeering crowd, a court heard.
Prosecutor Jo Martin described how Sabrina Barber strangled and beat Naomi Morrison, stood on her face, stubbed out cigarettes near her eye and on her hand and squirted liquid make-up into her eyes.
She and accomplice Melissa Jade Rowe also trampled on Naomi's abdomen, kicked her between the legs and told her they hoped she would never be able to have children.
Judge Francis Gilbert QC said he had never seen an attack of such ferocity by anyone of either gender of Barber's age.
Miss Martin said the savage attack on the Hoe in December 2009 was apparently carried out for the enjoyment of a large watching group.
Naomi, 16 at the time, was with a group of friends who encountered a group of 10 girls and a boy which included Barber and Rowe.
Barber approached Naomi, questioned her and then ordered her to lie on the ground.
Everyone at the scene was afraid of Barber, and Naomi obeyed.
Barber became more agitated and violent, but had control of the group, said Miss Martin, ordering them not to take photos, to put their phones away and not leave the scene.
She also had control of her own aggression, breaking off from her attacks and pretending to hug and comfort Naomi if anyone approached.
Barber humiliated her, sat astride her, punching her face, then dragged her to a tree, where she and Rowe took turns to strangle her.
They then told her to lie down, threatening to kill her and her parents.
Barber then stood on Naomi's face, kicked her in the head and told her she might as well commit suicide as she was worthless.
She then moved her to a metal bench, forcing her to head-butt it by grasping her ponytail.
One of the group then sent a text saying: "Just watching B mash up a girl - loads of laughs."
Miss Martin said: "Barber was playing to the gallery. She invited the crowd to give her make-up, then squeezed liquid eye-liner into her eyes, giving the impression that she would be blinded."
As Naomi lay there in pain and shock, Barber and Rowe kicked her repeatedly between the legs and then walked up and down on her belly, telling her they hoped she would have miscarriages and be unable to have children.
Barber then stopped the torture - estimated by police to have lasted an hour and a half - only because she had an appointment to meet a friend.
Miss Martin said Naomi escaped to the Navy Inn, where the landlady described her injuries as the worst she had ever seen.
Naomi was so shocked and in so much pain that she could not speak, and had to press out the letters of her name on a telephone keypad.
She was taken to Derriford Hospital, where her injuries were described as life-changing.
They included a huge amount of bruising, a haemorrhage in her right eye, a fractured eye-socket and a broken tooth.
Naomi was left unable to look in a mirror, terrified to go out and was set back in her education by six months, said Miss Martin.
She had to move back home with her parents and sleep with a light on and a panic alarm beside her.
Miss Martin added: "No doubt the trauma and the fear that she was going to die will remain with her for the rest of her life."
She revealed that Barber had a previous conviction for possession of a bladed article, and was on bail for a violent robbery when she attacked Naomi.
When arrested, Barber, of Milltown, Lostwithiel in Cornwall, gave a 'no comment' interview but pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Rowe initially denied being at the scene at all, branding witnesses liars, but on the morning of her trial pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.
Barber's barrister said her offer of an apology had been declined, but she now felt utter revulsion at her own actions.
She no longer drank or took mephedrone, and had changed in the year since the offence.
Ali Rafati, for Rowe, said his client, aged 20 and from Octagon Street, Plymouth, had suffered four miscarriages but had a young daughter being cared for by her parents.
"She has devoted the last 13 months to having her back again; it is all her life is about," he said.
Judge Gilbert told Barber: "You subjected this girl to a sustained, savage attack, the severity of which I have never seen for a defendant of your age.
"The level of sadistic violence in that attack was appalling.
"The evil you displayed, causing such severe injuries over such a long period of time, shows that there is a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public from you.
"You deserve a significant period of custody as punishment."
He sentenced Barber to 10 years in a young offenders' institution, of which she will serve five years followed by five on licence.
Judge Gilbert told Rowe she had joined in parts of the attack and made no attempt to stop Barber, and that she was lucky not to have been charged with GBH.
He sentenced her to 10 months in jail, suspended for two years, and ordered her to perform 200 hours of unpaid community work.
Outside the court, a tearful Naomi told The Herald she has just completed a Level 1 childcare course and wants to become a nursery nurse.
She said: "I am relieved it is all over but I hate her even more.
"I will never forget what happened to me; I thought no normal person would survive that.
"It was torture and nobody should go through what I went through.
"Now my life can start again."
Det Con Kevin Mortimore, one of the CID officers investigating the attack, said: "I saw Naomi the day after it happened, and her head was so swollen that she was unrecognisable."
"In 24 years of policing, I have never come across such an extreme level of violence over such a long period."

“Scumbags lkie Barber are of little use to society, she should be put down, or rot in jail. She will never be any good and will never reform. I hope she gets dealt with by others in jail who are bigger and stronger than her.”
