SAILING: All the latest regatta news with Tim Cross, RYA regional club coach
A FEW hardy owners and crews are still taking to the water and making the most of the recent challenging conditions. This coming weekend the Royal Western YC and the Royal Plymouth Corinthinan YC are hosting the final races in their current race series.
The RWYC Icicle series comes to a conclusion on Sunday. In both the IRC A and B classes it looks as if the class winners have been decided with both Neil Trathern (Ellusive) and Andrew Williams (Keronimo) recording an impressive set of results from the previous nine races. Both boats have a healthy six-point lead on their closest rivals.
In the PY fleet there are two boats that can still secure the class win this Sunday. Mark Hanley (Moondragon) sits one point ahead of second-placed Rex Frost (Electra).
With another weekend of near gale force winds forecast, the three fleets can look forward to some challenging and exciting conditions this Sunday.

The variable weather has taken its toll on the Royal Plymouth Corenthian YC Autumn series, with only four of the scheduled 10 races sailed. Dinghy sailors will be hoping the strong winds forecasted for Saturday do not materialise, allowing the final two races to be completed.
The RPCYC have just announced that GUL will be the official sponsors of their winter series, which will start in the new year with regular dinghy racing taking place on Saturdays during January, February and March. The notice of race and sailing instructions for the GUL Winter Series will posted on the RPCYC website www.rpcyc.com
RPCYC has hosted a successful race officer training day. The course content covered the responsibilities of a race officer, running an efficient starting sequence, time keeping, recording results and how to manage the conduct of a race course including liaising with both mark laying and safety boat crews. It was fantastic to see the training was so well attended and will be a great boost for the future sustainability of racing at the club and in Plymouth. There is another course planned for early 2013.
The recent strong winds have been providing great opportunities for local windsurfers. Windsurf Plymouth continues to run club sessions during the winter months, the final club session of the year is this Saturday, with the first session of 2013 taking place on Saturday, January 5.
