CULTURE Secretary Maria Miller (pictured above) has dismissed calls for an independent inquiry into the Jimmy Savile scandal, but took a swipe at the BBC for failing to broadcast its own television investigation into allegations against the presenter.

The Cabinet Minister told MPs the corporation had acted "inappropriately" when it pulled a Newsnight film into sex abuse claims against the late DJ and broadcaster but said she was "now confident" BBC chiefs were taking the claims "very seriously".

Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman said there was widespread "revulsion" that the allegations of systemic assaults took place at the beloved "aunty", the affectionate nickname for the institution, and claimed the star's "exalted" status allowed him to act with impunity.

Malala Yousafzai, 14, was flown today to Birmingham Airport and was being taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to receive specialist medical care.

The teenager was shot on a bus in front of her friends last Tuesday in what Foreign Secretary William Hague described as a "barbaric attack". Her life was saved by neurosurgeons in a Pakistani military hospital and she has since been in intensive care.

GARY BARLOW has expressed his bewilderment after another of his acts was axed from The X Factor.

Melanie Masson, 44, was given the boot from the talent show after the judges' vote went to deadlock again.

Gary was left reeling after losing two contestants from his over-28s category in as many weeks of the live stages of the competition. He posted a message online after the show saying: "What's happening out there?"
