CHILDREN at Hyde Park Infant School have plenty to make a song and dance about – after unveiling their new outdoor theatre.

The wooden theatre, which boasts colourful sails, was the brainchild of the infants who also helped to design it and raise funds for its construction.

Supported by the school's Parents, Teachers and Friends Association, the theatre was officially opened by Nick White from the Theatre Royal and Richard Marsh from Barefoot.

They were assisted by six-year-old Finley Fleming who was dressed as Elvis.

He won the opportunity to appear at the opening after taking part in an X-Factor style competition at the school.

The opening was witnessed by the whole school Liz Hill, head teacher at the infants school, said: "I'm delighted with the theatre. It will encourage spontaneous creativity, fun and play throughout the day."

Once the ribbon was cut the children went back inside the school hall to perform a selection of songs.

These performances by the Year Two children included a Spanish song which was sung by Charlotte and Matilda, Ben playing 'Oh When The Saints' on baritone and several of the children singing and dancing to 'The Best of Both Worlds' from the Hannah Montana movie. Katie Freeman, art co-ordinator, said on the launch day: "The whole afternoon has been such fun and a real celebration of the children's achievements within the arts.

"We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has made this event possible for the children."
