Selley strikes late to lift Valley back into top two
PLYM VALLEY soared back up to second in the West Clubs Women's Hockey League South Division following a 2-1 win over tricky opponents Penzance at Lipson Community College.
Valley's youngest player, Ellie Selley, kept her cool to convert the second half winner with just four minutes remaining on the game clock.
Selley's 66th-minute strike came after Kat Pitcher exchanged passes with skipper Lisa Dent to cancel out Morwenna Harris' 20th-minute opener for the visitors from West Cornwall.
Valley are now just a point behind leaders Bude, held 1-1 by Cornish promotion rivals Caradon.
Dent was quick to praise the contribution of defenders Jo Westcott and Kirstin Byng following their narrow victory.
Caradon central defender Sharon Jeffery was in top form at Bude, where the leaders led 1-0 at half time following a flurry of attacks.
Caradon top scorer Clare Poad levelled on the hour following a short corner to ensure her team returned to Liskeard with a hard-earned point following one of their best performances of the season against the promotion favourites.
Caradon's next opponents, fifth placed Mannamead, got back on the winning track thanks to four goals from Charlie Shobrook in a comprehensive 5-1 home win over basement side Truro. Forward Charlotte Cooper also scored for the Greens, who led 3-0 at half time.
Goal hero Shobrook admitted: "It was a great team performance."
With UCP Marjon snowbound, Plymouth Marjon 2's home South Division game against fourth placed Falmouth was put on ice along with Marjon's Premier One trip to Bristol University, which was also postponed due to the arctic conditions.
It was a similar story across the country and in the men's Davis Wood Hockey League, although PGSOB managed a red hot 6-0 home Conference South home win over Yeovil & Sherborne, while University of Plymouth beat Bodmin 6-3.
OPMs' hopes of maintaining their season-long position at the Southern 1 summit were scuppered at new leaders East Devon, who built on a 1-0 half time lead to defeat the Plymouth club 4-0 in Exeter.
With eight games remaining, OPMs – who beat East Devon 4-0 at Lipson earlier in the season – now trail the leaders by a point ahead of next Saturday's home game against seventh placed Dart.
East Devon host basement side Plymouth Marjon B claimed their second win of the season after they defeated cross-city rivals PGSOB A 2-0 with goals from Tom Hodgins and Hannen Ashlee.
Jon Smith scored twice as Plymouth Marjon C won 2-0 at Caradon in Southern 2.
