Shergold keen to bounce back against Cooper
KRISTINE SHERGOLD is determined to put the disappointment of a world title defeat behind her when she meets Lana Cooper in Wiltshire tonight.
The Plymouth-based super featherweight takes on Cooper over six rounds at the Christie Miller Sports Centre in Melksham, bidding to go into the summer break with a win under her belt.
Two weeks earlier, Shergold came within a whisker of securing career victory number two and returning to the city with the Global Boxing Council championship on her CV.
In the event, she lost the 10-round encounter by just two points to newly-crowned champion Lyndsey Scraggs in the Midlands on June 12 – a contest Shergold had taken at two days' notice.
Despite her lack of preparation, she left her mark on local favourite Scraggs on the Wolverhampton show.
Scraggs, who is now rated in the world top 10, needed 15 stitches to an eye injury which almost caused the bout to be stopped in Shergold's favour in the final round.
Shergold, now rated 22nd in the world in her weight category, is philosophical about the 96-94 defeat and is confident she can come away with a victory over Cooper, as she did last October.
It is also a tribute to Shergold's fitness that while Scraggs will have to lick her wounds until her cuts pass medical muster, the south Devon fighter came away relatively unscathed and free to pick up another pay cheque, a fortnight later.
She said: "Fighting for the world title was a great opportunity for me but it's over now and I'm not going to dwell on it.
"The only difference between myself and Lyndsey on the night was that she was better prepared."
Shergold added: "I was nervous going into the fight and it took me a round to get going, but after that it was not a problem.
"She (Scraggs) didn't hurt me at all. In fact, I don't have a scratch on me, unlike her, who will be laid up for a while.
"The referee (Terry O'Connor) twice took Lyndsey to her corner in the last round to check her eye which was cut down to the bone.
"Another round and I'd have stopped her, no question, but that's life. It didn't happen, although I feel I came away with a lot of credit.
"My cornerman Dave Bradley said my performance blew him away and my manager Errol Johnson is hoping to get me another world title shot in the autumn.
"But for now I'm focusing on Cooper, who I beat back in October 2008 in Swindon.
"Lana's style is much the same as Scraggs' – they both like to wear down opponents.
"That suits me as I'm not looking to stop her, just get more rounds under my belt and go into the break with a win."
