THREE pensioners who have studied computing at a community centre in Devonport are calling on other 'silver surfers' to join them in the wonderful world of technology.

Margaret Halliday, 73, Gladys Paice, 80, and Joan Anthony, 69, told The Herald they have "discovered a new world" since learning to use computers at Granby Island Community Centre.

And now the 'Spice Girls' – as the trio is known at the centre – want other pensioners to conquer their fear of computers.

Margaret, who spoke on behalf of the ladies, said: "Computers were just coming in when I retired but they seemed just for young boys and girls.

"I've never been frightened of anything in my life – but I wanted to conquer that fear.

"When we started at Granby, we were scared stiff at first. It was a different language.

"But we started learning new ICT skills and we have enjoyed it from there."

Margaret said the girls, all retired NHS managers in Plymouth, write emails, buy books from websites, can use Powerpoint and spreadsheets – and have also learned desktop publishing.

She said: "We also have great fun and friendship. Age doesn't matter at all on computers.

"For instance, it's really renewed my interest in Dartmoor as I learn about it from websites. Learning to use computers has made a boon of my retirement. I would recommend anyone else to come along and try it.

"It's like having the British Museum at your fingertips."

Sam Swabey, the centre's executive director, added: "We want to encourage people not to be afraid of computers."

But why does Margaret and her friends get called the Spice Girls?

She said: "I don't know why. Somebody just came up with it one day.

"We are no competition though – collectively I guess we are Old Spice!"
