Simmons winner clinches points for superb Vospers
Foxhole Stars...1 Vospers Oak Villa...2
VOSPERS manager Martin Burgess had every right to be delighted with the performance of his side as they claimed their second victory in three days.
"We were superb," said a beaming Burgess.
"The lads had passion and hunger against a side who will upset most teams on their ground this season.
"When we were facing a strong wind, our back four were fantastic.
"If there was one disappointing factor it was that we conceded a goal so late in the first half.
"We had to withstand some intimidating incidents not stamped on by the referee.
"But the lads kept their cool and did not buckle."
Foxhole, playing down the slope in the first half, put pressure on Vospers but the visitors' defence worked hard to restrict them to efforts from distance.
The wind was taken out of the Foxes' sails on 17 minutes when Joe Jasper chased down a seemingly lost cause to win back possession.
The former Plymstock striker looked up to find Jason Beynon and he laid the ball off into the path of Jamie Honeywill, who rifled the ball into the top corner from 12 yards.
On 33 minutes Foxhole's Jason Warne swung the ball over for Bradley Ralph to win a rare header against the solid Vospers defence and the ball found Lee Whetter firing past Andy Barnes from four yards.
Vospers shrugged off the setback and with the wind and slope in their favour in the second half were always in control.
It was no more than they deserved when, with 19 minutes left, Martin Mitchell, who is revelling in his new role as skipper, sent over a free-kick that found the impressive James Simmons powering his header home from close range.
Callington Town...3 Porthleven...4
THIS game had everything — cracking goals, penalties, controversy and, in the end, a victory on the road for the Fishermen of Porthleven.
Callington were first to settle, taking a fifth minute lead when Matt Green's right-wing cross was powerfully headed home by Ryan Lucassi.
That lead lasted just 10 minutes as Justin Searle crossed for Dan Stidwell to head home.
Town hit back on the half hour as a Port clearance saw the ball drop to Kevin Francis, 30 yards out on the right, and he let rip with a ferocious drive that left the visiting 'keeper a spectator as it flew into the far corner.
The lead lasted less than an minute when Jamie Burr converted a penalty.
The second half saw Porthleven up the pace and on the hour Stidwell grabbed his second before turning provider when he crossed for Searle to fire home.
Callington came back into it in the final minutes, reducing the arrears on 86 minutes when Dan Jefferis was fouled in the area and Andy Widdicombe fired home his spot-kick.
