SIMON WALTON'S bid to re-establish his career on-loan at Sheffield United has been dealt a blow after it emerged the Plymouth Argyle midfielder has been ruled out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Walton suffered the injury after playing just 30 minutes in the Blades' pre-season friendly at Mansfield Town last Saturday

Walton, who is on a season-long loan at Bramall Lane, was stretchered off, and a scan later on the luckless 22-year-old's knee confirmed the extent of the damage.

As well as being a personal setback for Walton, who went to the Championship club acknowledging it was his 'last chance' to re-establish his flagging career.

It also means both Argyle and Sheffield will have to decide, who exactly will foot the bill for the player's rehabilitation and, equally importantly, his wages.

Yorkshire-born Walton signed for Argyle in summer 2008 from Queens Park Rangers, but fell out of favour with then Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock.

The former Leeds United youth productspent almost all of last season (2009/10) on loan at Crewe Alexandra and jumped at the chance of joining former Argyle caretaker boss Kevin Blackwell's Blades, who are his 10th club.

“Why is this story still on the first page?

It's more than 2 weeks old.”

“Peter. I agree that we have had and still have lots of others useless players but I'm affraid that alone is not enough to open my sympathy valve for Walton.”

“Could I just say, good luck to Simon after suffering such a terrible injury. The posts on here seem to show no concern for the lads welfare. Obviously it didnt work out for him at Argyle and his career had gone off the rails in recent years. He was obviously ecstatic to be given the opportunity to start again in Sheffield and we should at least show some sympathy for his plight, as this could be a career threatening injury.
We have heard a lot about Sturrocks man management problems, players failing to live up to their potential etc, so lets not just call Walton a complete waste of space just because he didnt make it at Argyle. Lets face it, there have been lots of others.
Best wishes for a full recovery Simon”

“Let's just get rid of him. He's an expensive and useless waste of time. He will never succeed with any club!”

“Maybe Simon Walton should leave football and carry on his tv appearances with his wannabee wag girlfriend ! certainly not any good to any football team !!”
