DAVID Coles (Your Say, September 4) is correct about Croydon airport.

It closed because it could not cope with larger post-war aircraft, as the housing that encroached all around it prevented further expansion into the populous residential area established.

For those commenting on SHH's plans (September 5), they are just one of many private sector businesses involved over the last 20 years in what were once council-run services.

That's as a result of Whitehall continually reducing assistance to local government over that time, ostensibly to reduce the burden on the taxpayer.

You or I may disagree with that approach, but it is now ingrained in all political funding and thinking.

This is why every council has had to sell assets or remove liabilities from its books, sometimes regardless of what its electorate want or use.

The price received for Citybus and the lack of takers for the airport in 2001 and 2012 should tell you which is an asset or a liability in Plymouth.

Any new airport operator will need to get its own licence to fly and that quite a bit has changed on the ground since flying was last licensed from here. That licence is nothing to do with Plymouth City Council's wishes and hopes, any more than persuading other UK or European airports to give us landing slots will be.

It comes down to size matters, both that of the airport site and of the potential passenger base using it.

“There is, of course, one minor difference between Croydon and Plymouth Airports, and that's the rather key point that Croydon was an international airport where the largest aircraft need to land, not a regional feeder where they don't.”

“Common sense, Steve. But there isn't much of that around about the airport.”
