THE city is set to shiver this week as sleet and snow send the mercury plummeting.

Freezing conditions are expected today and tomorrow, The Met Office said.

Temperatures will struggle to get above freezing again today as early morning sleet turns to light snow in many areas by this afternoon.

Tonight there will be a crisp clear sky and temperatures will peak at just 2C.

However, 20mph winds from the South East will make it feel even colder, forecasters warned.

And the outlook does not look much better for tomorrow.

Hats and gloves will have to stay on since temperatures will peak at just 5C – but again feel much lower.

Light rain showers during the day will turn to snow showers by night.

Drivers should also take extra care since the Met Office has issued ice warnings for today and tomorrow.

Michael Lawrence, Met Office forecaster, said: "The morning commute for Monday and Tuesday could be quite tricky so drivers should be aware of that.

"There will be rain, sleet and snow. Both days are very similar though and will clear up as they go on.

"Despite some sunny spells it'll still be cold and temperatures will stay below average for Plymouth.

"Later in the week, generally the outlook is that the weather will be more settled."

Gritters have been treating roads since midday yesterday.

There will be lots of cloud around after tomorrow and temperatures will peak at just 4C.
