CITY media icon Gordon Sparks is backing The Herald campaign to get behind Plymouth Argyle and cheer them to victory at Home Park on Saturday.

BBC Radio commentator and Herald columnist Sparks wants a bumper crowd 'at the Theatre of Greens' spurring on the Pilgrims and intimidating visiting Fleetwood Town in the must-win match.

Sparks said of Argyle's fight against relegation after 93 years in the Football League: "A city of this size cannot let their team go into non-league status.

"We've all heard about the economic benefits a football club brings, but I don't think many people realise.

"The bars, restaurants, the takeaways and shops would all notice the difference on match days with fewer supporters around to frequent them.

"The hotels, too, would see a source of income dry up, when you think about how many away fans come to Plymouth and stop overnight."

Sparks added: "What I'm asking for is that, like Barnet a couple of weeks ago when fans flocked to Home Park, we do it again on Saturday.

"We've had good times at Argyle in the past and not that long ago. If you want those good times again, then come along and support the lads. Without the backing of a large crowd, we may not see those days in the near future."

    “Fingers burnt too many times!
It's very sad but after many decades of supporting my team, I feel like our generosity has been taken for granted and I will no longer pay silly money to watch such awful football!
The players at the club, are only playing for their wages, and couldn't give a hoot about what division we play in next season.
Paul wotton should be playing every week as a true plymothian we need his spirit and fight in this relegation dog-fight!
I hope we survive but I will not be giving another penny to the property developer bleeding the club dry till he can get his hands on central park!”

    “Thanks,
but I have paint to watch dry.
Get A better team together, and A manager who knows about soccer and play with some passion, and I be up to watch.”

“There's no point moaning about the Plymouth public not supporting the city's team. Football has become nothing more than a 'product' thanks to the greed and overkill generated by Sky and their ilk. If the product's rubbish then it simply won't sell - market forces and all that. There's far too much football on TV these days anyway which in turn has generated a whole raft of so-called 'plastic' fans who follow Premier League teams on the box over their own local teams. Instant success and all at the touch of a remotre control.”
