Celebrations will be taking place across Britain to honour the Armed Forces, but the spotlight will be on us as this year's host city.

A packed day of family friendly activities will be taking place on The Hoe including military displays on land, sea and air, as well as an appearance from the Red Arrows – all expected to draw thousands of visitors to the city.

One of the highlights of the day for visitors will be the unique opportunity to go on board the Royal Navy operational warship HMS Argyll, and get an idea of what life is like for naval forces while at sea.

Lieutenant Commander Bob Evans, of the Devonport-based ship, said: "I'm very excited that we are able to offer visits on board HMS Argyll – it's not every day the public are welcomed onboard an operational warship and it will be a really eye-opening experience to see what it's like for the men and women who serve on the ship and often are living on it for months at a time.

"Places on the trips are limited, so I would strongly advise people to book their tickets now to avoid disappointment."

The ship, which has been deployed to Sierra Leone and the Middle East, will be open to visitors from 9.30am to 11.30am, with boats to the ship departing every half hour.

Tickets are available now, completely free of charge, from the Barbican Tourist Information Centre and will be given out on a first come, first served basis.

Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Michael Wright added: "Plymouth has a rich and proud maritime heritage going back centuries so it is a great honour for us to be hosting the Armed Forces Day National Event.

"We've got a packed programme of activity lined up to mark the occasion, which will give the public a chance to meet both serving members of the forces and military veterans, find out more about what they do and get up close to and perhaps into some of the most impressive military equipment around."

It has been organised by Plymouth City Council and sponsored by Babcock International.

“My Grandad was the lead designer on the orginal Hawk in 1969. He started with 17 sketched-out ideas of how it might be done and discard 16 of the...He describes it as 'managing ignorance'. In those days military aircraft were typically expected to last about 5-10 years in service before being replace. The Hawk started delivering aircraft to the RAF in 1976 and is still in production 36 years later.

Im looking forward to taking my two year old son along on saturday to see what his great grandad designed 42 years ago. Very proud!”

“Let's just enjoy what's on offer! We get little enough in this part of the world as it is. Nothing is ever perfect, so why not savour the best bits of the day and accept that there's always a fly in every pot of ointment ! Sometimes it's good to take a child's viewpoint - get excited about a great day out and pray the rain stays away for us. Hope those who are going along will have a lovely day and make some happy memories. I'm looking forward to it...always go googly over the red arrows :)”

Just think of all that fresh clean air with all the roads shut...marvellous! I can't wait...there really is so much going on in Plymouth this year.”

“Why dont they just say more road closures in the city at a weekend ,plus the weekend before it as well for the so called race for life . Plus last weekend ... plus two weeks ago. Plus more to come . There surely cannot be a city that so regularly closes off the place .”

“Given the tragic recent fatal incidents involving the Red Arrows neither of which have been officially explained yet, we are perhaps fortunate that one or more of them did not fall into west London today. Has the council been adequately reassured that are homes and lives in Plymouth will not be at measurable risk.”
