Sr John Hawkins should be on the list
MAY I propose one more name to the list of important 'Sons of Plymouth'?
It is that of Sir John Hawkins, pictured left, a man who did more for Plymouth than most of the other names put together.
He is not so well-known probably because of the lack of history taught in our schools today.
His popularity declined in Victorian times on account of his involvement with the slave trade.

It is strange that people conveniently forgot the slavery much nearer home that was domestic service.

“I am not voting on for anyone on this ridiculous selection. Who chose these candidates? Why cant we vote for whoever we want. At least Athur Conan Doyle lived for a time in Plymouth. Francis Drake was born near Plymouth, became mayor and brought water into Plymouth from Dartmoor and was world famous in his time. There are other Devon sailors like Frobisher and Grenville. John Hawkins was Plymouth born.
I am sure there are loads of people out there that would be more suitable candidates then the ones given to us to chose from.”

“I suspect the "PC Brigade" would block any attempt to add Hawkins to the list, given his links to the slave trade.
I know you can't apply 21st century values to what went on in the 16th century, but that won't stop 'em!”

“Could you tell your illiterate headline scribbler that it's Sir - not Sr - John Hawkins?
I'm not convinced that one of the key leaders of the fleet which defeated the Spanish Armada would have appreciated being addressed as Señor.
I know it happened before you were born so you probably couldn't care less, but it is a matter of some local importance and - so your website claims - thisisplymouth.”
