OUTDOOR swimmers will have to pay to use Tinside Lido when it opens for the summer on Saturday.

A one-year experiment with free swimming has been dropped after Everyone Active took over running the pool on the Hoe.

But Mount Wise swimming pools also open for their 2012 summer season on Saturday – and will continue to be free.

Everyone Active boss David Greenwood said that Plymouth City Council had not specified that Tinside should be free.

"We have had feedback that a lot of customers have said they would rather pay and have a pleasant experience than have it free and over-crowded."

Mr Greenwood said that last year the council was forced to employ three security guards at Tinside to deal with anti-social behaviour.

Everyone Active is also introducing a small shop to sell items like goggles, and a poolside kiosk selling food and soft drinks for Tinside users.

At Mount Wise there will be a vending machine and perhaps an ice cream trolley when the pool is busy.

The lido and Mount Wise pools will be open from 10am to 6pm every day during school holidays, and until 7.30pm on Wednesdays.

During term time they will open at noon during the week, and at 10am on weekends. Closing times remain at 6pm and 7.30pm on Wednesdays.

Children under four are free.

At Tinside a swimming session of at least two hours at busy times costs £2.70 for children aged 4-16, £3.80 for adults aged 16-59, and £2.80 for seniors and concession.

A family swimming session costs £11 (£9 for concessions).

A full day ticket ranges from £4.70 to £6.70 and a family day ticket is £20.

A season ticket valid until September this year is £25 for children, £45 for adults and £30 for seniors and concessions.

“@Bob_Wickerman. You must be a big softie. Junior schools used to take the kids there in the 1950's to learn to swim. The last time I used it was in the 1960's and it cost a tanner. Of course it's cold, it's an open air swimming pool. We were always told, it's all right once you're in! It won't be any colder today than when it was back then and certainly no colder than the sea. We were able to stay all day for a tanner and come and go as we pleased. There were two rafts we used to swim out to and if you were a bit braver, swam to The Mallard from Lions Den. I'm pretty certain there was a kiosk in the Lido then. Good old days. It was often so busy we had to queue for ages to get in. How times have changed.”

“You used to have to pay when I was a kid using the Lido, so why not now. As long as the money is used for it's upkeep.”

Not much of a pleasant experience in ice-cold water! At least if it was overcrowded all that body heat would have warmed it up”

“Tinside pool always seemed under-utilised when it was free last summer one can only assume that with the introduction of hefty charging it will be even more under utilised .”
