TRAVELLING along Gdynia Way on Sunday afternoon towards the city centre, we were in the right hand lane and indicated our intention to enter the left hand lane.

In the car I was in, the driver checked his mirrors and was about to enter the left lane until some young male driver in a silver vehicle decided to speed up to prevent our moving in. As far as I am aware, you always give way to vehicles from the right in this country. In my opinion, people like this young driver should not be on the road. Let's see the age for driving a vehicle raised to 35. I don't expect to be travelling on the highway and end up in a road accident.

I think the police should be targeting every young driver.

    Assault charge

A SOUTHWAY man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a police officer.

Mark Tyrrell, 38, pleaded not guilty at Plymouth Magistrates Court to assaulting a Detective Constable in an alleged incident on September 12.

Tyrrell, of Bampfylde Way, was granted unconditional bail to return to court on October 9.”

“I read with some relief the letter from Mr Tyrrell.
Travelling from Plymstock to the City Centre I have joined the traffic at Gdynia way with an increasing sense of paranoia. It seemed that complete strangers were intent on running me off the road, often lurching across the hatched portion of the road to do so.
So thank you Mr. Tyrrell. It is obvious that there is a widespread misunderstanding of the highway code regarding lane changing but I am reassured that there is nothing personal in what seemed rather strange behaviour.”

“OK, apparently my point was entirely missed by people who can't read properly.

Jonno. As you well know sitting in the middle lane doing exactly the speed limit is irritating and causes frustration. If you bothered reading my post you'd have realised that is waht I was talking about.

A Learner. At what point did I say everyone was a bad driver? I believe I said people with poor judgement and confidence were bad drivers. Just as people with poor judgement and too much confidence are bad drivers.

I still think everyone should re-sit a basic test every 10 years. To ensure you are up to date and fit to drive. (by thae way holding a licence that would include me)”

“Changing the legal driving age to 35! Are you completely out of your mind, some of the people who drive emergency vehicles are younger than that, so do you really want to wait longer for someone to come and get you when your in a serious emergency just because the person has to be over 35? If the police targeted any young driver then they wouldn¿t have time to solve many crimes because there is so many drives and I¿m guessing by young drivers you mean those under 35? All the hundreds of thousands the police would have to target just because there young? Maybe they should just target ANY dangerous driver?
Yes there are some idiots who drive out there, but not every can be caught, its just the way thinks are, you can try all you like but it just won¿t happen. Its not only younger people which drive like idiots you know, the older people tend to be the ones causing more accidents for not looking in their mirrors and pulling out in front of people. Maybe you should have to retake your test when your 35 to see if you¿re still driving safely, but not being able to drive at all until your 35 is ridiculous. I would love to see how many over 35 or older would be able to pass there driving test if they did it now.
Driving tests are way more harder and are getting increasing harder, so if you do pass you have the ability to be a good driver. And something is being done to combat younger drivers and basically scare them into driving safely, its called learn2live and i went to it last year and it changed my perception on how i drive and many of the hundreds around me, i would recommend it to anyone who is learning to drive a moped or car or any type of vehicle.”

“You obviously do not know your highway code. It is not always give way to the right. This "young" chap was well within his rights as you were changing lanes and should give way to him. As for not driving until you are 35 what a load of rubbish. Today I saw one person going the wrong way around Derriford roundabout and another who came in the exit of Sainsburys petrol station and they were both well over 35.”

“OR you could get people re tested every ten years. so when they dawdle along getting in everyones way and sitting in the middle lane for miles on end they get a foot up their backside.

I have been driving for over 10 years and have been carved up or put in a dangerous situation by middle age idiots who have forgotten how to drive.

Your comment shows you are an unconfident driver with poor distance perception. STOP BOTHERING PEOPLE.”

“It's ridiculous to suggest that the driving age should be raised to 35. All this would do is result in inexperienced 35 year old driving on the roads and most industries requiring drivers would end up with a staff shortage.

I feel something should be done to combat young maniacs whilst still allowing sensible new drivers the freedom the road offers. Perhaps limiting new drivers to a car of less than 1000cc regardless of age. This still wont remove the possibility of accidents but should greatly reduce the high speed incidents and boy racing.

You give way to the right on a roundabout Mark and as the previous poster mentioned indication does not give you right of way. (Bus and Taxi drivers would do well to remember this.) I suggest Mark that you remain a passenger until you learn the rules of the road. (In my opinion)”

“"Let's see the age for driving a vehicle raised to 35" This comment is so flippant and ridiculous. I am a 24 year old driver. I stick to the speed limit, I give way to other vehicles who are pulling in when it is safe and appropriate for me to do so. However this morning on my drive to work, an older gentleman, in his mid to late fifties I would say, decided not to check his blind spot, who knows if he even checked his mirror, and simply pull into the right lane. He was probably centimetres from hitting me. Luckily for him, I am an alert and defensive driver so I was able to prevent any collision. Not all young drivers are bad drivers, just as I know not all old drivers are bad drivers. Some people just are bad drivers regardless of age. It's about the attitude, not the age.”
