FOOD-LOVERS flocked to a waterside market – eating local producers out of their stock.

The first Good Food Market at Plymouth's Royal William Yard proved such a success it will return even bigger and better next month.

An estimated 7,000 people got their teeth into yesterday's event, which boasted 30 stalls selling food and drink from the region.

Everything from meats and fish to pates, crisps and cider were on offer. And Bank Holiday appetites saw hungry city people munch around three quarters of the suppliers dry within hours.

Event spokeswoman Dawn Bebe said: "It was amazing; it was a huge hit. We are reeling from how successful it was.

"There was a really great, laid-back atmosphere and it was quite buzzing down there.

"The first stalls started selling out of food at 1pm and by 1.30pm we had three or four that were completely sold out. By 3pm around three quarters of the stalls had sold out of many of their things.

"The community just loved it. One person walked up to me and said 'The Yard is officially here'."

After tasting success with the inaugural effort, a special Jubilee Market is now planned for Bank Holiday Monday, June 4.

It is set to include another Good Food Market, with the addition of a Good Craft Market, open gardens and "eccentric English sporting attractions".
