The council said more than 90 per cent of people welcomed the plan in a consultation.

Cllr Debo Sellis said many signs in the town were redundant.

She added: "We want to make the most of the town's World Heritage Site status and this will start with the removal of signs to de-clutter the town centre."

Cllr Sellis added there were five different signs within 200 metres which indicated a roundabout and there were two signs which said there was a school.

The consultation was held in October and covered other traffic issues and parking.
