Of course, it's just another attempt to get personal information from you - 'phishing'. It's a small refund figure, so just about credible, a neat trick – for those easily fooled – not us! If you have received something like this you could forward it here phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it.

Here's a shortened version of what Her Majesty's Finest will say:

Thank you for letting us know about the suspicious email you received.

Please be aware that HMRC does not use email to contact people about being eligible for a repayment or to ask personal information or payment.

If you are concerned that after receiving a HMRC related scam email please forward a report to us at security.custcon@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk so that we can look into it. If you disclosed credit/debit card information you need to immediately report the matter to your bank/card issuer.

“Well done for changing the headline from "Heading heading heading", Herald. Can you try in future to prevent it from happening several times a week?”

“Another day, another headline providing evidence that the Herald is staffed, from the top down, by incompetents.”
