Tax return time returns
IT'S Tax Return Time again, and the usual scam is back. A reader sent this to me:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am sending this email to announce: After the last annual calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax return of: £211.47
To receive your return, you need to create a Government Gateway account.

Of course, it's just another attempt to get personal information from you - 'phishing'. It's a small refund figure, so just about credible, a neat trick – for those easily fooled – not us! If you have received something like this you could forward it here phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it.
Here's a shortened version of what Her Majesty's Finest will say:
Thank you for letting us know about the suspicious email you received.
Please be aware that HMRC does not use email to contact people about being eligible for a repayment or to ask personal information or payment.
If you are concerned that after receiving a HMRC related scam email please forward a report to us at security.custcon@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk so that we can look into it. If you disclosed credit/debit card information you need to immediately report the matter to your bank/card issuer.
