Telling her Grandma's love story
A STIRRING and comic true tale of love across the Channel gets an airing next week.
Caroline Horton plays her own grandmother in You're Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, the role that earned her the Best Solo Performer gong in The Stage's 2010 Edinburgh Fringe awards.
This is the story of her short-sighted, eccentric French gran's unlikely romance with a tongue-tied Englishman that followed a chance encounter at a tennis club.
Caroline came across the story when sorting through her grandmother Christiane's effects after the elderly woman moved into sheltered housing in 2002.
Among the clutter was a shoebox containing Christiane's wartime letters, with details of her romance with teacher Cyril Horton and her memories of occupied France. A story of humour, resilience and love of life emerged, which Caroline turned into a one-woman show.
The story starts at the Gare Du Nord in Paris where Christiane is waiting for the train to England that will reunite her with her fiancé after years of separation through war.
You're Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy is at Calstock Village Hall next Friday.
The visit is backed by Carn to Cove, which promotes professional entertainment in village halls and other rural venues around Cornwall.
