THOUSANDS of pounds is being invested in 'quick-win' schemes to help sort out flooding issues.

Improvements have been identified by Devon County Council to help communities which bore the brunt of last year's floods. Homes at Buckland Lane in Buckland Monachorum will benefit from a £2,500 investment in new gullies and a drainage pipe.

Devon County Councillor and Leader of West Devon Borough Council, Cllr Philip Sanders said: "I am delighted that the combined efforts of the borough council's drainage engineer and Devon County Council's local highways officer has resulted in the rapid allocation of funding to address this problem, which was a significant threat to a number of homes."

The measures are a direct result of feedback from flood surgeries and drop-in events held across the county.

They are also based on the findings of the Flood Investigation Report into the summer floods.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Chair of the Devon Flood Risk Management Partnership and Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "Communities have played a big part in highlighting the actions we're now putting into place, by providing important information at the flood surgeries and drop-in events.

"These schemes should help to protect our communities and make them more resilient against flooding in future."

“As SWW appears to own all the water in the south west, perhaps they ought to finance all flood prevention schemes. After all, they charge such high rates for their services. Maybe some of it should be put back into the communities and not the shareholders pockets.”
