CITY tiler Ben McCarthy has been recognised as one of the industry's best newcomers.

He was highly commended in the category of Outstanding Contribution to the Industry – Best Newcomer at the Tile Association's annual awards in Birmingham.

The 28-year-old went back into education, at City College Plymouth, to learn a new trade through Plymouth company Spot On. He was fast-tracked through his NVQ 2 course and his commitment impressed Spot On MD Russell van der Schouw, who decided to support him through his training.

Mr McCarthy, whose previous job involved groundworks, was also put through a rigorous apprenticeship scheme developed by Spot On chairman Michael Piggott. He completed his NVQ training in March and has now taken on other disciplines, such as specialist stonework.

"Ben's appetite for learning knows no bounds and he's quickly developing into a first-class tiler," said Mr van der Schouw.

Mr McCarthy said: "I really wanted a career change and to get a real skill under my belt. I can't thank Spot On and City College Plymouth enough."

College lecturer Chris Kingdon said: "Ben has been an excellent student. This award reflects his hard work, commitment and talent."

Spot On offers floor-tiling and screeding, and projects have included the Cornish home of Lenny Henry and Dawn French.
