PEOPLE in Plymouth have only got four days left to nominate deserving and kind-hearted young people for The Herald's Youth Awards 2009.

The deadline for nominations is Monday afternoon – and we need more people to give us the names of young people who deserve to be rewarded for their achievements.

The Youth Awards 2009 are to be presented at a special ceremony at City College Plymouth on Thursday November 19.

A total of 12 awards will be given out – with four of them being chosen from the nominations between now and the big day.

The Herald has already received nominations for the four awards – but we need more over the weekend.

We want teachers, parents and other people in the city to nominate those young people who have achieved great success in their activities over the past year.

We will then study all the nominations and choose our winners, who will be announced at the ceremony. The four categories which are open to nominations are The Herald Young Hero Award, The Herald Young Business Award, the Environmental Project of the Year and the Fundraising Project of the Year.

We want youngsters who have been 'heroes' for the first award; those who have done well in a business project for the second; those who have carried out an excellent environmental project for the third; and kind-hearted fundraisers for the fourth.

The Herald Youth Awards 2009 initiative launched at the end of last month.

The main sponsors of the awards – now in their fourth year – are City College Plymouth and Plymouth City Council.

The awards are also part of Plymouth Enterprise Week. They have been highlighted as a flagship event in the week.

The five-day Enterprise Week festivities, which are being organised to champion business in the city as part of National Enterprise Week, will involve hundreds of people from all sorts of business backgrounds and countless young people.

But The Herald Youth Awards are being set up to offer something different – the chance to reward those young people who have put their heart and soul into business or the community.

The Herald's editor, Bill Martin, said: "We have received nominations for the four awards over the past couple of weeks – but we want more by Monday.

"There are so many deserving youngsters in Plymouth – please make sure they have a chance of winning one of our awards."

To nominate, follow the instructions on the dedicated www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/ya website.
