Tom Daley puts Plymouth in the spotlight with new TV show
TOM DALEY has spoken about working on a new prime-time TV show which highlights the best of Plymouth.
Splash! premiers tonight on ITV1 and will see Tom teaching stars how to dive, including presenter Jenni Falconer, Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo and comedian Dom Joly.
Training sessions were filmed at Plymouth Life Centre and Tom’s celebrity students will be judged by a panel including his own trainer, Team GB’s Andy Banks, as well as comedian Jo Brand and former Olympic diving medalist Leon Taylor.
Tom said: “It was really weird to have celebrities in Plymouth but they loved the Life Centre and hopefully it will highlight what a great facility it is.

“It also gave me an insight into how Andy feels when he’s coaching and how frustrating it can be when people aren’t making changes, which will hopefully help me in the future.
“Diving is quite a dangerous sport and I think it will give an insight into what it takes to be a diver.
“But it’s my dream job, and a reality show about diving is amazing and something that I thought would never happen. It was really fun – like a massive pool party.”
The show will be hosted by Vernon Kay and Gabby Logan and will involve three heat weeks, two semi-finals and a final.
The celebrities’ training with Tom will continue at the Life Centre for the next three weeks before the final on February 15.
Andy Banks, who has worked with Tom for 10 years, is head coach at Plymouth Diving and a coach to Team GB.
He said: “It’s fantastic for the sport of diving. On Splash!, the celebrities will be showing viewers what they would be like if they tried diving.
“It’s fantastic that they’re willing to make fools of themselves in doing it.
“There is a wow factor that they’ve learnt something so hard. That’s why the concept is so good.”
Splash! has been made by Plymouth production company Twofour Studios, further strengthening the show’s connection to the city.
Darren Smith, Twofour’s Executive Producer for the show said: “It’s fantastic continuing to work with Tom in a show as big and exciting as this. It’s great to be working with Andy Banks too; what he doesn’t know about diving isn’t worth knowing.
“Tom has a loyal fan base both in Plymouth and across the world – so it’s fantastic to offer viewers the chance to see celebrities mix determination, drive and daredevil stunts as they take to the water.”
Other celebrities joining Tom will be model Caprice, reality TV star Joey Essex, TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin and Olympic ski jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards.
Sugarbabe Jade Ewen will appear in tonight’s episode and was determined to take part. She said: “I hate water – it’s a big fear for me, but I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to work with the best diving trainers in the country.
“Tom is absolutely lovely, but I don’t envy him his job at all. The other day, he just turned up and dived off the 10-metre board, somersaulting all the way through the air. He’s so graceful.”
The Life Centre opened in March and is home to some of the best diving facilities in the UK.
Julian Egan, general manager for Everyone Active at the Life Centre, said: “It’s been great to be involved with a television programme of this nature. The children at the pool have been able to watch the training taking place and have really enjoyed seeing people that they recognise from television and sport involved in diving.
“We have another three weeks of the training at the centre and we are really looking forward to watching the celebrities progress during that time.”
