Swimming trunks worn by Plymouth diving star Tom Daley are to go on display at a museum as part of an exhibition on London 2012.

The young Olympian's 28-inch trunks, emblazoned with the stylised Union Jack Team GB design by Stella McCartney, will take pride of place at the Museum of London.

They will stand next to a long-sleeved dark blue leotard which was worn by medal-winning gymnast Beth Tweddle.

Her outfit is embellished with rhinestones and signed by the gymnast. She wore the same design when she performed her bronze-medal winning routine on the uneven bars.

Beth said: "The 2012 Olympic Games was the experience of a lifetime, enhanced by the amazing support of the British public, so I'm very proud that my Team GB kit will be displayed in the future for everyone to enjoy."

The display of Olympic and Paralympic outfits including the trunks and leotard is planned for the spring.

Beatrice Behlen, the museum's senior curator of fashion and decorative arts, said: "The 2012 Olympics and Paralympics were such an uplifting and momentous occasion for London. We are delighted to have been given such recognisable items from the Games. They represent a significant moment in London's history and this means we can protect and preserve them for generations to come."

“28"! I knew he packs his trunks well but that is ridic...... OH! I see. If they put them on eBay I bet they would go for thousands. There are lots of girls (and boys) that would like to get into Tom's Trunks!

Regarding this site and the Herald (The Daily Daley) I think the 90% of the hype that surrounds this young man is down to them and NOT Tom or his management team. Wouldn't surprise me if they are pretty miffed with all the bad feelings that are generated at him because of his constant over exposure on here due to their lack of ability to find any real news and stories to report on.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom last year in Australia where he was competing. He was very pleasant to talk to and took the time to stop and pose for a photo. I wonder how many who post negative comments on here have actually met him or know him? At the end of the day he is a positive role model and is doing far much more with his life than the average dross from Plymouth. Give the guy a break!”

“And next in line for an award is the Herald in the guinness book of records for the most posts on a single bronze winning olympian .
I hope he earns enough money to bail them out when the paper goes under due to lack of sales due to this constant dross being forced upon the public in the name of "news" every day .”

“PS- hey Tom, market your own brand of trunks with your face and logo on them and you'll make a mint!
You could also market Tom Daley diving toy figures for people to play with in the bath”
