DIVING takes centre stage again this week with the four-day annual Armada Cup set to make a splash at Plymouth Life Centre.

Just two weeks after hosting the British Gas Diving Championships, Plymouth Diving are staging the long-standing Armada Cup tournament at the £46.5million venue.

In addition to the city team's impressive list of diving stars, clubs and athletes from around the United Kingdom and Ireland will be pitting their skill and nerves against one another in front of a packed auditorium.

Olympians Tom Daley and Sarah Barrow, and up-and-coming diver Francesca del Celo are being rested after their success, but British Gas Diving double gold-medal winner Tonia Couch (right) is in action in the synchro finals.

The Brewin Dolphin-sponsored meet starts later today.

The competitions are the girls and boys (14-18) synchro (5pm-6pm), and boys and girls 1m (6pm-7.30pm).

Plymouth Diving's Team GB coach Andy Banks said even without Daley and Barrow all four days will provide first-class competition.

Banks said: "We're proud again to host the Armada Cup and thank our sponsors Brewin Dolphin for their continued support.

"Tom is still not fully recovered from his chest infection, while we're resting Sarah (Barrow) and Frankie (del Celo).

"Tonia will be competing in the synchro and there will be plenty of other top divers coming down. It's going to be exciting and entertaining."
