She said: “Scampering around Britain for my column I find there are particular bits of our crowded island which always retain a particular attraction for people.
“We have built on this basic information to create a definitive guide. The Sunday Times Best Places to Live will prove invaluable for anyone starting a family, retiring, or simply considering a move.”
The feature will run across two weekends on March 17 and 24.
An overall winner will be announced as well as the top ten places across nine regions in the country.
The Times named Totnes as one of the 30 "coolest places in Britain".
According to the newspaper its "cool credentials include a great market and a successful fight to stop a costa Coffee shop opening to compete with locally run cafes".
Across the UK, the best place to live according to the survey is Stamford in Lincolnshire, second is Kendal in Cumbria, third is Wye in Kent and fourth is Thornbury, Bristol.

“I agree with MissAnthrope that there is some seriously inherited wealth in Totnes and many of them are on another planet to the rest of us because they can afford to be. That said, they are seriously innovative people and do support each other's businesses. Maybe they can afford to fail if something goes wrong. Interestingly a lot of military officers seem to live up that way too although they may not seem the eccentric types, I reckon they see the land investment as a goldmine.”

“That's going to limit your options somewhat Charlie, as drunks and racists make up about 95% of the population of Devon and Cornwall.”

“Myself and my family went to Totnes last summer on the way back from Dartmouth, one sunday afternoon. Within an hour of parking up, we witnessed a group of drunks swearing and singing in the town centre, and overheard a group of men and women in their 60s telling racist jokes, while drinking coffee by the the quay. We left very quickly.
Wouldn't visit again, let alone want to live their.”

“It's all down to inherited wealth jimbob, the Times reading residents of Torynes have voted for themselves, so it's not much of a story really.”

“Totnes sits smack on the main road between Torbay and Plymouth and can therefore look forward to endless convoys of rubbish trucks carrying Torbays garbage to the Devonport incinerator when it opens..;)”

“Sorry is this for the most benefits claimed, this has to be a joke.... The place is full of eccentric people who have struggled to work one day in their lives.... Governed by SHDC who have one of the highest employee sickness records in the UK .... Its a rat run for Torbay and Dartmouth at best !!”
