'Take Back Totnes' celebrate road sign victory
MEMBERS of a new protest group in Totnes have claimed their first victory after having its fictitious 'twin town' removed from a road sign.
The members of the Facebook group Take Back Totnes were furious over the graffiti on the sign welcoming drivers to the town, and saying it was twinned with Narnia, as featured in the children's book The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe.
Take Back Totnes, who have also presented an opposing view to the campaign to stop Costa Coffee opening in the town, have gathered more than 300 Facebook 'likes' since starting their campaign little more than a week ago. They are also considering fielding candidates for election to Totnes Town Council when the opportunity arises.
A meeting in the town on Thursday night will give people the chance to find out more about the group.

Spokesman Matt Trant said: "I was one of those people that live in the town who was in favour of Costa Coffee.
"A lot of people I know and spoke to were either in favour of Costa or weren't really bothered.
"With all the coverage of Costa deciding not to come to Totnes, we didn't feel that the town was being fairly represented.
"We're not trying to fight the town's alternative image, because that's one of the reasons people love Totnes, but we don't think that image should dictate the way in which the town does business."
In their Facebook statement Take Back Totnes wrote: "STEP ONE: Totnes people demand the authorities remove the graffiti from our town welcome sign. We do not live through a fairy tale wardrobe.
"We call upon all Totnesians to rise up and take back your town from those who believe they can impose upon us their peculiar and damaging ideas.
"We celebrate the alternative and diverse community Totnes has become. However, we do not believe those who choose to live in our wonderful town should impose their idea of the rural idle upon the vast majority of local people.
"These ideas are creating long term damage to the local economy and the town's reputation."
Take Back Totnes are hosting an information and ideas meeting on Thursday, November 8 at 7pm at the Studio Lounge. All are welcome.
