Track needed for future BMX stars
HOW brilliant have been the last few months of Olympics-related events in our city; from the torch relay some months ago to the homecoming parade.
The motto of the games was "Inspire a Generation" and my seven-year-old daughter truly has been. After watching the high-adrenaline BMX racing along with David Beckham and his sons and Prime Minister David Cameron (my daughter and I watched it together on TV, while they were there at the live event), my daughter announced that she'd like to "do that".

The high-adrenaline BMX racing events at the Olympics provided thrills and spills
So I looked to find the nearest BMX race track and/or club – only to find that while clubs and tracks exist in Exeter, Newton Abbot and Truro there is no such club or track in Plymouth. Which got me thinking – what other Olympic sporting events are there for which our city has absolutely zero facilities for those who have been inspired?
I appreciate that facilities like BMX race tracks don't come for free, yet I also see the spoil mound generated during the building of the Life Centre being removed and wonder if, with a little forethought, the spoil could have been turned into the jumps and berms of a BMX track so that the city might produce a future Olympic champion in this sport?

“Still no reply from British Cycling.
Mainy, out of interest why do you take your kids to Exeter rather than Decoy?
I see that they have got a winter series at Exeter, might try and get up for it.
Blackpot, if you want to talk about niche sports- check out the two baseball diamonds at the end of central park. Indeed, how many people within the UK are currently involved in competitive diving?
For the record, the area I noted previously as being a good site actually falls within home park not central park and is currently pretty much out of bounds unless you climb over the broken sections of fence.”

“stussydaz,if you read my post you will see that i said i would support a BMX track in a suitable ,so no,im not looking at the small picture. However i do question whether BMX really has enough of a following to make it viable in a location like Plymouth.so until more work was done,my support would be tentative.”

“Penninsula...well if you want to go down that route, unless im mistaken a BMX track is just a tad larger than your average cafe,or am i wrong, right, thats that stupid comment dealt with.
Mainly.......i totally respect where your coming from and think its great your kids are into a healthy and decent pastime/sport,but we can't have every sport here, and we now have that hideous yellow monstrosity to look at.I would certainly support a BMX track situated somewhere else suitable in the area, just not in Central Park.”

“"I would object to the BMX track ,i dont want to see more of the park gobbled up,the land of the old centre should be landscaped.BMX is a niche sport as well.
What i would like to see is a cafe in the park for starters."
Moreover, you don't want to see "more of the park gobbled up" by a BMX track, but would be happy for a cafe to be built so the land could be "gobbled up".”

Doesn't necessarily have to be in the park. There are cafe's within the life-centre and one at the pitch and put hut.”

“@blackpot
im guessing you have never been to a regional or national bmx event. watching kids as young as 3 learn to ride the track, having fun and making new friends while keeping fit.my children have been doing it for 4 years now and its part of are life.as it is to hundreds of other families across britain. Ive taking several of my daughters friends to exeter with us for practice becuase they wanted to try it out.they loved it. A city the size of plymouth would produce some awesome riders of all ages.
As for having a velodrome i cant comment as i know nothing about the sport or area needed for a track but it would be great to have both.
Could be a scaled down version of the national cycling centre in manchester.”
