PEOPLE of Tavistock were treated to an afternoon of traditional cooking, thanks to Pixon Lane-based The Dartmoor Stove Company.

More than 20 people joined owner Ali Cox and chef David Pengelly, who showed them how to cook effectively and creatively on traditional range cookers.

In just two hours and with one Rayburn, the professional chef, who has been cooking on traditional stoves for more than 30 years, showed everyone how to cook more than 15 dishes – all at the same time!

Guests were then invited to tuck into the spread that ranged from curries, quiches and cakes, to an English breakfast, a roast dinner and lasagne, and ask practical and technical questions about the wide range of traditional stoves available.

The Dartmoor Stove Company owner Ali Cox not only sells these traditional stoves, but has also had one in her home for many years and knows first hand how versatile they can be.

Ali said: "I know too well that cooking on a traditional range is different to your usual kitchen cooker, but this doesn't mean it has to be difficult. By giving people a taster session like this, we can show them how to get the most out of their stove and make their kitchen the heart of their home."

Sue Gardener from Tavistock was one of the guests at the cooking demonstration and said: "It was like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat, only better because it was food! There were endless delicious dishes all cooked with minimum effort – I can't wait to go home and try it for myself.

"What's more we all got to learn from each other's experiences as well as the professional chef – it was fantastic!"
