Train firm wins safety award
A SOUTH west train operator has been awarded for high safety levels at more than 170 of its stations.
First Great Western has attained Secure Stations status at 171 stations.
The status is part of a national scheme, led by the Department for Transport and BritishTransport Police, which recognises stations that have worked with police officers and other local partners for the best possible security measures.
It takes into consideration crime figures and customers' opinions as to how well they think their stations are managed and maintained.
First Great Western's Head of Stations, Mark Heffernan, said: "The safety and security of our customers and staff is of paramount importance throughout our network. We don't intend to sit on our laurels. There is still more to do and we are striving to see even more of our stations accredited over the coming year."
Michael Greedy, manager of independent rail consumer watchdog, Passenger Focus, welcomed the news.
Mr Greedy said: "The safety and security of passengers is crucial and passengers will welcome First Great Western initiatives that work to reduce crime at the station and on the train."
