A teenager sent a series of agonised text messages to his friends and family before hanging himself in a barn at his grandparents' farm.

Matthew Tidmarsh, from Callington, was said to have been depressed over the break-up of his relationship with girlfriend Emily Childs.

  1. inquest

Although the two continued to be friends and see each other socially as part of a larger, tight-knit group, police analysing Mr Tidmarsh's computer said it was clear he was having difficulty coping.

At an inquest in Truro, which recorded a verdict of suicide, Detective Sergeant Tim Wright said Mr Tidmarsh had left a number of "Dear Diary" entries on his laptop.

He said the 19-year-old was upset about the break-up and added: "While he kept seeing her, that was also very difficult for him."

Miss Childs said the couple had been seeing each other for about six months and had the normal ups and down of a young couple.

"During the time we were together there were occasions when we had issues or a falling out, but we always got back together," she said in a statement.

She said he was also concerned about his relationship with his mother, who had threatened to throw him out after he came back home drunk and ill on a number of occasions.

His mother, Nicola Martin, said the issue had caused "some tension" but she could never have forced him from home.

Late on the night before he died, Mrs Martin said she received a number of text messages from her son which had left her concerned.

His friend Fiona Mutton drove him to his grandparents farm at Latchley, near Gunnislake, dropping him off just after midnight.

Just after 3pm next day, his uncle, Kevin Martin, found his body hanging in the barn.

“Suicides tend to leave friends & relatives feeling guilty which exacerbates their grief. The Japanese have been known to commit suicide in order to punish someone close to them whom they feel has let them down in some way. Intentional or not suicide hurts others.”

“Coroners reports should not be reported like this, the WMN and 'erald staff behind these articles should be ashamed of themselves.

Articles like this are intruding on private grief and can only add to the anguish of the family and friends of those who have died.

This is not "news" it is lazy and thoughtless space-filling by editors who should be better at curbing their voyeuristic tendencies.

“She was named in open coroners court therefore ANYONE is allowed to use names of those named, so the Herald have done nothing wrong, though if it were me I'd have just said " girlfriend "

So sad, when will youngsters realise that there is no need to do this especially concerning a breakup, there will always be someone better for you out there

To the young lady concerned do NOT shoulder any blame as there is none to be had by anyone involved

To all parents whose children are going through something similar talk to the youngster even if they don't want to talk to you,let them know you are there and that they can come to you any time of the day or night”

“How does this read to blame the girlfriend? I don't understand why the Heralf felt it necessary to name the poor girl! The Herald always do this, they've never had sympathy for suicides. Just like that guy who committed suicide at Exeter prison a few years ago and the Herald branded him a Gunman. They got to be careful because one day they will be sued for libel! Typical of the press, typical!”
