TRURO amateurs Jacko Sanders and Danny Downing produced a second tremendous giantkilling act when they sent the holders crashing out of the Perranporth Open Winter Foursomes on Sunday.

In ferocious 40mph winds gusting to 60mph, the Truro pair, who had defeated Carlyon Bay pro Paul Turpin and Jason Gay in the first round, proved too resilient for last season's winners, Falmouth pro Nick Rogers and his amateur partner Colin Kitt from China Fleet, as they ran out winners by two holes.

In the third round on Sunday, January 10 they will face Perranporth's Ian Doocey and Gary Marson, who themselves recorded a fine one hole win over county player Richard Ackland (Trevose) and Andy Nicholson (St Mellion) .

Meanwhile Danny Downing's son Billy, partnered by Jack Mewton, chalked up another success for the family and their home club with a comfortable 4&2 win.

Just three professionals remain in the competition – Lanhydrock's Richard O'Hanlon, Newquay's Mark Bevan and unattached teaching pro Wayne Graham.

O'Hanlon and his partner Sara Taylor romped to an 8&7 win, while Bevan and Nic Pepper also closed out a comfortable 4&2 victory. Former winners Graham and Luke Stevens also had an easy ride, winning 6&5 over last season's Plate winners, Gerald and Adam Taylor, of Perranporth.

● Newquay, who took revenge over Tehidy Park in the first round of the Frank Wills Salver for their defeat by the same club in last season's final, face Looe in the second round at Carlyon Bay on Sunday.

Seven other second round matches will also be played this weekend.

● West Cornwall's youngsters swept the board in the Junior Maxam Cup played on their home course last week.

As well as taking the team prize for the best gross score, they also recorded the lowest net score of 134 – the only team score below par – and had the best gross pair in Alex Glasson and Matt Richards, who shot a fine 70.

They were ably supported by Joel Cameron partnering Georgia Hall and Jamie Cameron playing with Ryan Weeks, who helped West Cornwall return a gross team score of 149, five shots better than their nearest rivals Newquay on 154, with Perranporth third on 156.

Eighteen teams from across Cornwall competed in the event with the format being three teams of two with the best two scores to count.

● Bowood Park completed a unique double when they defeated Tehidy Park 3½-1½ in the final of the Junior Summer Knockout played at Newquay last week, having previously won the Bolitho League in the summer.

● Killiow professional and county coach Richard Sadler maintained his fine autumn form with a two under par round of 38 Stableford points to share the individual pro's prize with Lostwithiel's Steve Bonham at the latest meeting of the Cornwall County Professional Golfers' Alliance at St Austell last week.

He also helped his playing partner, Carlyon Bay amateur Martin Bullock, win the amateur award with 42 points.

The next Alliance meeting is at West Cornwall on Thursday, November 12.

● A ground-breaking Winter Golf Series for all category one handicap players in the county will get under way later this month.

The winter series, sponsored by the Truro and Penwith College Golf Academy, has been set up by Jon Coleman (West Cornwall) and Steve Chapman (St Enodoc) to give the best players in Cornwall the opportunity to compete against each other during the winter months.

"The events have been set up to complement the CTC and Perranporth Open Winter Foursomes and give low handicap players the chance to compete regularly year round," they say. "The events will give the players on the fringes of the Cornwall squad the chance to get noticed by county team selectors during the winter months."

Five events have been arranged, the first of which will be held at St Enodoc on Sunday, November 15. The other four events will be played at West Cornwall on December 20, at Trevose on January 16, at Bowood Park on February 13 and finally at Perranporth on March 14.

Each event, with an entry fee is £15, will be played over 18 holes (individual Stableford) with three gross prizes and one net prize. There will also be an Order of Merit running throughout the series with the winner picking up £350.

● The CGU's County Dinner is being held at the Hotel Bristol in Newquay on Friday, November 20. Tickets cost £25 and further details can be obtained from club secretaries/managers.

● St Mellion touring pro Adam Frayne ended his domestic season with an 18th place finish in the PGA EuroPro Tour Championship at Slaley Hall in Northumberland.

His first round level par 72 put him well up with the leaders, but a disappointing second round of 79 ruined his title chances. But he hit back with a second 72 in the final round, which left him in 28th place in the Tour's final Order of Merit.

Frayne will jet off to Spain later this month to compete in the second stage of the European Tour Qualifying School.

● Trevose touring pro Phil Rowe also completed his season in Europe at the weekend, recording a second top 10 finish in a row as he took eighth place in the Allianz Championship de Barbaroux in France.

Following his third place in last week's Masters 13 event, Rowe shot rounds of 71, 73 and 70 for a two under par total of 214 to scoop more than 2,000 euros in prize money.

● Gammon Trophy winners Tehidy Park regained the Tamar Trophy when they defeated Exeter, winners of Devon's Still Cup, on their home course by a handsome margin of six matches to one.

This result was a complete reversal of the result of the inaugural match held at Tehidy Park in the spring. It is now hoped this will become an annual fixture between the top two teams from Cornwall and Devon.

The members of the victorious Tehidy Park team were Nikki Hodge, Chris Williams, Gloria Sandow, Lyn Brookes, Hilary Wood, Pat MacMichael and Shirley Clark.

● The final of the CLCGA Vice-President's Cup will be contested by Mo Hammond (Falmouth) and Maggy Holmes (Carlyon Bay) at Newquay on Wednesday, November 11, starting at 10.30am.

● St Mellion's famous Nicklaus course, which has recently been improved and extended to more than 7,000 yards, has been ranked by Today's Golfer as "the most difficult course in England".

The magazine says about the course: "To say it presents a stern test of golf is a gross understatement and you certainly have to be on the ball."
