Why UKIP needs more than one issue
ALTHOUGH I fully agree with David Salmon's and UKIP's stance concerning the lies and deceits we have been drip fed by politicians, over the last 40 years, about the impact that Europe will have on us, I would like to ask him and his party: "Apart from insisting upon, and possibly getting your way, on an in/out vote over Europe, what other policies do you have in place to face up to the growing problems that this country now faces" ?
He states that although our fishing industry is now almost dead on its feet, we hold 70 per cent of EU fish stocks within our waters. Is that out to the old 12-mile limit or to the 200-mile limit? Either way, how would we protect what fishing boats we have left from French and Spanish trawlers if we do leave the EU? How would we enforce our sovereignty when push inevitably becomes shove?
We have no Royal Navy to speak of now; what ships are left of that once great service could probably all be contained in just one basin at Devonport Dockyard. Does his party plan on rebuilding our Navy and what sort of Navy would it be? How do we pay for it, not by yet higher taxation one would hope.
The talk is of re-establishing trade with our old Commonwealth partners, so a real deep sea Navy is needed to ensure the safety, in some waters, from endemic piracy of the Merchant Fleet that is somehow to be rebuilt, from the parlous state it has also fallen into.

How would the Falkland Islands be safeguarded from yet further threat without a rebuilt Royal and Merchant Navy, as the Spanish would enthusiastically throw their weight behind that of Argentina. Do you also think the French would be far behind if they thought there were some pickings to be had?
Those newly acquired Blue Water Royal Naval ships would then, in all likelihood, be completely unsuitable for the task of shepherding trawlers and smaller vessels. Who doesn't remember the damage suffered by our frigates during the Icelandic Cod Wars of the late 60s and early 70s? Are the modern day frigates any more suitable for that sort of task than the older and more robust Type 12s and early batch Leanders were?
What of the benefit culture that has sprung up over the last three generations? Despite the best efforts of past-it politicians it is still seen by many to be a worthwhile lifestyle choice, as benefits now often exceed what can be obtained from an honest working wage. Benefits are paid to those whose children don't even live here, or paid to those who would wish us harm and think nothing of spreading their hatred of us.
Uncontrolled immigration is another threat to this nation. Diversity of peoples is fine, multiculturalism is a farce and needs to be brought under control. All that we see from this experiment is whole areas now turning almost into ghettos, where even the police sometimes fear to tread. We must be careful we don't offend others' beliefs and traditions, we are often told by far too many do-gooders. What about our beliefs and traditions? Do they not matter any more?
Come and live here by all means. Embrace our ways, become a valuable part of the community. Do not refuse to integrate or make any attempt to learn our language and ways. If that is too difficult, then don't come!
I would say to David and UKIP that you are standing beside a door already ajar, you just need to push it further to open it. But you will definitely need to become more than just a "one issue" party. Pursue your aims of a referendum by all means, but I think you all will need to up your game considerably and have real policies in place. Without them all you will achieve otherwise is to destroy a Tory vote and leave us all wide open to another disastrous Labour government, and further losses to the monster that is now Europe.
